P1 Gen3 fan running continuously and also in sleep mode after Bios and Windows update

2020-10-09, 22:15 PM

This is annoying. Brand new Thinkpad P1, just after the last updates the fan does not stop running (even at <1 % CPU load) and also when sleeping for hours, unless the laptop is shut down completely.
Not sure, who is to blame (updates performed ), but I need a fix.

X series users seem to face the same problem https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/Fan-stays-on-when-it-s-in-sleep-mode/m-p/4126417

Anyone from Lenovo monitoring this forum?

EDIT:
Changing the sleep mode in the BIOS from Win10 to Linux at least shuts the fan off when in standby. Still, the fan is always on when plugged in and powered on. ("Intelligent cooling"-> Balanced, also in BIOS). Power management: set processor cooling policy in both, plugged in and battery to passive. But the fan only switches off when running on battery.

I hate to revive an old topic like this but did you ever find a solution.

I find that the fan is constantly running as well when system is powered on a plugged in (both Lenovo 170W changer and TB3 dock/USB-C charger).

And I guess the answer is that Lenovo employees are not monitoring this forum.

You're probably right. ... And no, I have not solved this problem.

Just installed the ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 1.12 which claimed to improve fan control.
But it got worse. Now the fan is running on battery too.
I used to use ThinkPad laptops only since 2004. But this will probably be my last one.

Same here, extremely disappointed with the lack of support in dealing with this issue. The latest BIOS update did nothing, the fans run at 3100-3200RPM during normal use and spike up to 4000+ RPM for minutes at a time, even though the temperatures on the CPU are below 50C across all cores.

Hi @someotherguy, please have someone at Lenovo take a look at this. There have been numerous reports of fans being unnecessarily loud, running all the time, and generally being obtrusive during daily use.

I love the size of that notenbook, but the fan is awful.

I have only i7 but 64gb ram.

Fan kicks in FULL speed and the PC does NOTHING crazy. Browser open, CPU load23% Ram used 30%

When I render some Video i am fine with it.

But during spreadsheet work and internet browsing that level of noise its just unaccaptable. (given the price range we talk about)

My t470s was way better from that perspective.

Did anyone escalate this to the support desk? Warrenty?

Same here. I was expecting the i9 to be hot, but not to the point of requiring full blast fans when not doing anything with the computer. Sure, the notebook is not hot to the touch, but surely there's got to be a better middle ground between safeguarding the hardware and preserving the user's sanity.

Coming from a Macbook Pro (after having migrated away from PC notebooks years ago), this is quite shocking. No surprise that the Dell Precision I had returned just before ordering the ThinkPad was doing the same (but with a 6 core i7 of the previous generation).

I guess Apple was onto something with their abandoning Intel after all?

Note added: I re-installed Lenovo Vantage (which I had removed as soon as I received the laptop) and was invited to install a number of updates (among which a few drivers/firmware and a BIOS update). Switching to "Balanced" mode - not a trivial thing to do, as the Windows battery icon is replaced by a Vantage gizmo that doesn't give access to any mode switch - seems to have improved the fan overdrive significantly (hopefully not too much!)

BIOS Version/Date    LENOVO N2VET27W (1.12 ), 12/21/2020

SMBIOS Version    3.2
Embedded Controller Version    1.07
BIOS Mode    UEFI

Misery loves company.   I try to pretend I'm on a jet plane so the noise is less annoying.  Nothing running but the fan is always going.  Perhaps it's making Pop Tarts for aliens in some far off galaxy...

Not sure if anyone also has the issue of having the laptop being warm even when it's in sleep mode?  All of my settings are good - turns off after 15 min yet I can pick it up a day later and it's still warm.

The new P1 should be classified as a TableTop as it runs too hot to have it on your lap.  I'm even afraid to put it on the couch to grab a drink as it might melt a big hole in it.

Also, out of curiosity, how is everyone's battery life?  Mine seems really bad and did a post when I first got it but now that spring is here, it would be nice to get outside and be able to work without lugging a generator to plug into after 30 minutes.

Did you try to switch to "Better Battery" life mode? This is accessed through the taskbar ^ menu and selecting the tiny battery/wall plug icon and moving the slider to the left. That should stop the jet fans and keep the unit fairly cool. Switch back to "Best Performance" (full right) when you miss the jet fans (or need the extra boost of GHz).
