P1/X1E: unable to detect it is unplugged when detached from TB3 dock (eGPU)

2018-10-25, 13:28 PM

I've found a reliably produceable bug for me with my P1 and my TB3 dock (mantiz venus). BIOS is latest.

If you plug the laptop into the TB3 dock, it will charge and works as normal. However, when you unplug, the system does not detect it has been removed from the power source. You have to turn the laptop off for it to detect it is now running off battery. Hope someone else can confirm this with other powered TB3 docks.

Actually, the system is not charging through the Thunderbolt 3 dock. The only time that charging will occur is when the system is off. Otherwise, it is imaterial that the unit shows that it is connected to the dock (and power) while it is running.

I'm sorry, that is all wrong. Perhaps you misunderstand: the P1 charges off the dock any time it is connected, as it should because it supports USB-c power delivery. The problem is that once it is unplugged, the laptop will think it is plugged in and using AC power until it is restarted.

Check the charging status using the Lenovo Vantage app .You will see that the power is connected from the TB3, but the battery is not charging. That's by design, not a defect.

YMMV

Again, I'm afraid you are misunderstanding:

1. The battery does charge. My TB3 dock supplies 87W.

2. The issue is that ONCE DISCONNECTED from the power source, the P1 STILL THINKS IT IS CONNECTED TO POWER.

Thank you.
