P1 gen 2 - Erratic core temps and excessive heat at low CPU usage - recent BIOS at fault?

2021-05-17, 5:41 AM

Hi all,

I would appreciate any thoughts on why my P1 gen 2 is capable of scorching skin.

On bootup all cores reach 100C and then fluctuate drastically for 10 minutes, until finally calming down and fans turning off. Then open a web browser and it can shoot up in temp again and fans turn on.

Bearing in mind that I keep the laptop on a raised stand so it even has excellent airflow, there is nothing blocking the fans.

All occurs at really low CPU usage. As in the example, 25% CPU and 75-85C. It was actually hotter prior to screenshot.

For 3 weeks now it's been consistently overheating like this. I noticed that it ran a Bios update a few weeks ago, could that have anything to do with it? (ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 1.38)

Has anyone else had similar issues that occur suddenly, or in relation to a Bios update?

Thanks for your input!

Dear richk,

Yes.  The laptop sits on the cooling pad and I even use side fan trying to reduce the temperature.  I tried on the hard surface too. Finally, I have to reduce the Max Processor Speed to 35%.

Thanks for your information. It is still under warranty.  I will send the unit in.

Best regards,

Kindergarten

Hello Ira1000,

Greetings

Kindly try to go to BIOS, load the default settings then save and exit.
Observe if the same issue occurs
Update us how it goes

Hi Lorenzo,

Thanks for your suggestion.  I did update the BIOS as requested, but this didn't seem to have an impact. Perhaps the issue hasn't arose through the BIOS, so do you have any other ideas as to why this could occur?

Thanks,

Louie

Re:P1 gen 2 - Erratic core temps and excessive heat at low CPU usage - recent BIOS at fault?

Hi Lorenzo,

After a full day of diagnosis I have discovered some disturbing things. The 'power mode' slider dramatically affects heat and performance, but in the reversal of expectations....

A boot-up test resulted in:

Best performance mode:- CPU cores max. 98C.- Fan Speed 6000rpm.- 7 minutes till idle.
Better/balanced Performance mode:- CPU cores max. 71C- Fan speed 2000rpm.- <2minutes till idle.

Similarly I ran a second test watching a 4k YT video.

Best mode: 84C CPU, fans at 4k rpm
Balanced: 67C CPU, fans off!

There is an insane difference, with the best 'performance mode' continuously keeping the CPU at max clock speed and there is no thermal throttling to reduce these dangerous temps. In balanced mode, the CPU speed is restricted to around 60% which is good for some tasks, but I also need it to perform at 100% for work.

Furthermore my thinkpad doesn't initiate the fans at an appropriate speed under full load. Its literally 50% fan speed, despite how hot CPU is. I downloaded TPFanControl which controls the fans properly, but why should I have to do this?

- Why can't Windows optimally choose CPU speed?

- why is my pc working harder and performing worse than working at an optimal speed?

I would really appreciate if anyone could shed light on this!

Sorry for the late response.
If this is really too warm to touch then it would be best to have it reported to the tech support team.

Re:P1 gen 2 - Erratic core temps and excessive heat at low CPU usage - recent BIOS at fault?

Hi,

My P1 Gen2 encountered the same issue from the first date of purchase.

Temperature can hit 99C with bottom and side cooling pad if I use preset Lenovo Intelligent Power option.  I have to reduce the Max Processor State to 50% in order to cool down, it would then be about 40C to 45C.  If I reduce the Processor to 35%, it would be about 38C to 40C (I am more comfortable to this).

Is there any solution?  Or it is the Bios fault?

Below is the laptop spec:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9880H CPU @ 2.3GHz

Bios version: N2OET50W 1.37

Thank you.

Regards,

Kindergarten

Try disabling all of the autostart programs, other than those from Microsoft or Lenovo.  See what happens.  If that helps, add them back one at a time. to see which is the cause.

Dear richk, I had tried to reset laptop with just preinstalled software and CoreTemp (ver 1.17). It still hit 99C whenever I switched on laptop. It would normally stay around 70C to 90C when I run some simple Excel calculation if I use Lenovo Intelligent Power option. I gesture i9 is the issue. Thank you. Best regards, Kindergarten

99C is certainly too hot.  All I can suggest is the machine on a hard surface (not something like a bed or sofa) so vents are not blocked.  If you are still under warranty, call support.  If not, you might replace thermal paste.
