Hi, this is due to pumping out of thermal grease. You need to reapply the the thermal geese. But over a few months, this problem will come back. I found that using the graphite thermal pad solved the problem permanently. The performance stays the same as newly applied thermal grease.

Thanks for your information. I have this thermal issue since the first day I bought. I will update the Lenovo's solution afterwards.

Re:P1 gen 2 - Erratic core temps and excessive heat at low CPU usage - recent BIOS at fault?

Just a quick update.

Lenovo support took back P1 for part replacement.  After two days, I am informed that it is NORMAL to reach 99C upon laptop startup and the laptop is fine as long as it remains below 100C.  I just wonder how true is this statement.  Can anybody share your opinion?

If I don't do anything, the temperature would be around 42C to 50C.  Running mathematical simulation (Memory usage: <500mb, Core/Thread usage: 5 to 10), it would stay between 90C and 99C.  Running Excel Macro for 5 to 10 min, temperature is around 80C to 95C.  All the while, I have one cooler pad under laptop, one fan behind and one 9-inch fan to keyboard.  Indoor ambient 26C.

I can't imagine how long would the laptop last if I run 24/7 simulation.

My Laptop specs:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9880H CPU @ 2.3GHz

Bios version: N2OET50W 1.37

Installed RAM: 64gb

Thank you.

Usually, that machine is expected to shutdown itself if the temperature is too high to protect the system itself .
You may have to keep it on observation right now as I believe would also be what the tech support team have suggested.
If you do encounter issues like shutdown on normal usage or any other symptoms then you can reference the same case number for reopening the case.

Dear @Lorenzo_Lenovo ,

I just got system board replaced.  Thermal has been improved to around 86C to 96C instead of hitting 99C.  By tweaking the Max Processor Speed to 80%, "active" fan and others to battery saver mode, it stays between 40C to 56C with mild usage.  I would be testing the math simulation (Not mining) next time.  If the overheating can't be solved, I have to reduce the Max Processor to 50%.
