P1 gen 2 USB-C charging specs

2020-02-09, 4:07 AM

Curious what the minimum and maximum charging rates are for the USB-C ports on the P1 gen 2?  I know USB-C PD maxes out at 100W - but can't seem to be able to find any details about the implementation on the laptop itself.

I got P1 gen 1. would assume the same.

minimal -- 65W rated usb-c charger. won't even charge with 45w rated.

60/65W rated charger would charge at about 45-50w, and is not able to sustain when all cpus (not gpu) are running -- i.e. battery gets discharged too.  but it is a slow process, can probably last  4-5 hours before battery gets exhausted.   cpu gets throttled a bit more, but less than 10% than if running on regular 135W adapter.

75W rated charger can keep up but battery would not charge when all cpus are running.

87W rated charger can charge at about 15-20W while all cpus are running.

there are quite a few compact size 65W/70W rated usb-c chargers that also have 1 or 2 usb-A port, works perfectly if you don't plan to run full cpu over extended time. otherwise, get one of these 87W macbook charger.

Hello,

According the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 gen 2 PSREF sheet at https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_P1_2nd_Gen, this model ships with a 135 watt Slim Tip adapter, as it requires more power than can be delivered over USB C (current spec allows for 100 watts, maximum).

Re:P1 gen 2 USB-C charging specs

My P1 slim-tip not working due to main board circuit problem.

Got a slim-tip to USB-C adapter to convert the 135W slim-tip power into 60W USB-PD, can power up the laptop when slow down the CPU, but battery won't charge at all, even in sleep mode or shutdown.

I am wandering if I can plugin two USB-C power source, such as 60W+60W or 60W+85W? Anyone have tried this before?

Hello,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to charge the computer from multiple sources.

It would be best to get your mainboard repaired or replaced so that you can charge it normally.
