P14s gen 2: BIOS update 1.36 breaks 4k display function

2021-06-19, 17:42 PM

I installed BIOS update 1.36 yesterday (shortly after it became available). Unfortunately, with the next restart to Windows the display configuration was messed up, and X-Rite Color Assistant failed to work. It became clear that Windows no longer recognized the monitor, and instead treated it as "Generic Plug and Play". Proper color management, as well as the HDR function, no longer worked.

I tried a few things:

  • Reinstalled the monitor inf file from Lenovo software download
  • Removed and re-added the monitor device in Windows
  • Manually told Windows to use the Lenovo driver
  • Reset all BIOS settings to default

None of them made a difference. In the end I re-flashed the previous BIOS version (1.34, available as manual download from Lenovo), and the display was fixed with the next restart.

Can you confirm why 1.36 isn't working right for me?

BTW, among other things the notes for 1.36 mention making the "Cool & Quiet on lap" control available in WMI. Unfortunately it doesn't actually do that, the control is neither in the BIOS nor in WMI.

I had the same issue after updating from BIOS 1.34 to 1.36.  However, I'm happy to report that BIOS update 1.37 restored x-rite color assistant display profiles after running the x-rite program, getting the message that display profiles are missing, and then clicking the link to have them restored from the Lenovo server. Thanks Lenovo for the quick fix!

Hi phgw,

Just a thought here.

It maybe that some of the applications are not updated or needing some pre-requisites.

Personally, if there is no real need to update the BIOS, it maybe better to stay with the one that is working for you.

Well, it would have to be something in Windows, not in any applications, since the driver itself isn't working. It's a 3-week old install, fully updated, so that seems unlikely; but I can't completely rule it out, of course. Again, the same driver works fine on 1.34. If there was an oversight when building the new image, I'd want the engineering team to know.

Staying with 1.34 is the only option for now :)   After all, I need the display to function properly. But I am hoping for some other improvements from an update (e.g. regarding the Cool & Quiet on lap operation). This one seemed to include more control over S0/S3 sleep states as well, which isn't critical for me, but could come in useful later.

P14s gen 2: BIOS update 1.36 breaks 4k display function

2021-06-21, 18:11 PM
Hey - I ran into the same exact issue. Lenovo Tech Support was spectacularly unhelpful. Question - where did you find the older version 1.34? I just looked and can only find 1.36... Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Bernie

Yeah, the old versions are a bit hidden. In the support web page for your device, try navigating to your driver downloads and find the BIOS update (for 1.36). Under the "Details" column there's an icon (of, like, a text document). Click on that to "View Details", then at the very bottom there's a table of previously release versions.

This is the page for my device, for example.

Beautiful.... exactly this happened to me yesterday. Like 30 minutes after I unwrapped the new notebook.

And going back to 1.34 will recover the X-Rite profiles? X-Rite can't download them from the Lenovo Cloud either.

Thanks for your thread!

Sorry, got to rolling the BIOS back just now. I'm happy to say: yes, the profiles reappeared. Just really disappointed with tech support, as I'm sure we are not the only ones who have encountered this issue. Couldn't find anyone even trying to look into it - HW support said to talk to SW support and they told me that I had to buy extra support (to the tune of $200) as even Premier Support wouldn't cover an issue like that...

Thanks again, Philipp!!

Glad it's working for you as well!

The X-Rite download failure is also caused by the driver issue: X-Rite is looking for custom profiles specific to the installed display, but custom profiles for a "generic plug and play monitor" don't exist. The real profiles are actually on disk already -- but without a proper driver they can't even be manually applied.

IIRC the patch notes for the 1.36 update mentioned adding support for one or two other display panels. I suppose as they added those, they inadvertently dropped support for this panel? One would expect pre-release QA testing to catch something like that, but I suppose mistakes can happen. At least there's a way we can help ourselves here.
