P14s severe battery drain when powered off

2021-04-28, 12:06 PM

Hi there,

I own a relatively new P14s (type: 20Y1-CTO1WW, two weeks old) that shows severe battery draining when powered off completely. I very much like the laptop otherwise, but I'm not sure whether I will consider returning it just for this...it might be a deal breaker as I use the laptop on the road a lot.

Overnight the battery drains about 15..20% which is way, way, way too much for my liking. As a comparison: my previous mobile workstation was a 14 years old HP8510w, and to this day (with the original battery) it loses less than a percent in a week of being powered off.

I already checked several forum topics for help about this. As the system is fully powered off (not hibernated/suspended), I'm assuming this is a BIOS issue, not an OS issue. I already have 'Wake On Lan' disabled, 'Always On USB' disabled, 'Wake Up on Alarm' disabled and 'Boot Mode' set to 'Diagnostics' instead of 'Quick'.

The BIOS version is R1BET61W (1.30).

Can someone help me with this? Thanks in advance.

I'm having the exact same issues with a Lenovo ThinkBook - only weeks old but lost 30% battery when shutdown from Friday evening to Tuesday evening.

I've disabled all the things you have done too, but still getting the same drainage problems. I only use my laptop on AC power (not the battery) and therefore the battery report is showing no battery usage, yet it still loses charge when turned off.

This is the 2nd machine that I have this problem with, I returned the first one as I presumed it was faulty; however the second machine is doing the exact same thing!

Yes Simon, I agree it seems very faulty.

Anyone from Lenovo who can shed a light on this? Thanks!

Hi! Thanks for your message! As stated in my opening message, I already had this disabled.

I checked this setting just to be sure (it was disabled) and it doesn't make a difference unfortunately.. Lost another 15% overnight :-(

P43s. One year of usage so far and very little overnight drain. 1% or 2%, if any. Regardless, not noticeable. I have USB on when laptop is shutdown. Must be some configuration issue? Toggle it on and off?

Hey! Thanks for your message. Yes I would think it is some configuration issue....but the usual suspect settings have not had any influence.

I did manage to rule out a battery issue by setting the battery to 'disabled' for about six hours -- not a percent of battery was lost. This is slightly hopeful.

I guess I will have to try and rule out every possible setting...every suggested setting was tested already.

As for the T43 you own: does it have the same BIOS and version? Mine is: version 1.30. I would think the specific hardware configuration in combination with the BIOS is relevant for this issue..

Thanks!

Well for my P14s system the only and latest version of the BIOS is v1.30. It's a relatively new Gen1 system. I'm not ruling out a BIOS bug, so I'm very interested to see anyone here with the same system/BIOS.

My battery declined from 100% to 99% in the span of one day.
