Re:P15 and P17 running Linux

Has anyone heard of any success stories with anything other than Ubuntu (and windows of course)? I've seen cases where for example something packaged by Canonical works in other distributions that are derived from that, but not in Ubuntu itself. Strange

Re:P15 and P17 running Linux

Dave,

new finding:  this is not a docking station issue as originally thought

1) I have connected a P52 (not the P17) with the same version of Ubuntu, everything is the same except the simon sutton repo that is autoconfigured on the P17

        Result: everything works fine

2) I have connected the P17 via an HP thunderbolt 3 docking station, and it shows the same corrupted screen area issues.

As of now, the P17 doesn't work with any docking station/External monitors.  What do you think is the path forward?  Even tried running linux mint with the same drivers, and it shows the same problem.

Thank you!

Re:P15 and P17 running Linux

  • P17 20SQS02400 (i9-10885H, 32GB, 1TB SSD, 17.3 UHD, RTX 3000 6GB)
  • Bought with Win 10 Pro installed to save time and to use the license (haven't figured out to use the license for Win10 virtualized)
  • Didn't know about BIOS/setup doc at first, so tried to install Mint XFCE with Secure boot enabled. Waste of time.
  • Now have Linux Mint 20.1 installed and most things working.
  • Linux Mint 20.1 XFCE > VMWare Workstation Pro 16.1.1 > Windows 10 Pro: works.

Issues:

  • Fn-L|M|H: not sure that these do anything. Fans turn on during stress tests, though.
  • External monitor is Dell U2711 (27" IPS) connected via HDMI. Also tried HDMI > adaptor > Display Port.
  • Laptop display is set of 1920x1080 for readablility. U2711 native resolution is 2560x1440. NVidia 460 drivers (and 450) limit eternal monitor resolution to 1920x1080. This is definitely an issue for me.

Even my 11-year-old T410 would run the above software ok, AND put 2560x1440 on the U2711. The P17 can't?

BTW, I tried Xubuntu (uses XFCE) for a bit. Not a patch on Mint XFCE.

I have not put in a ticket, expecting no help because of Linux. Am I in the right place, or should I put in a ticket?

Mint on these machines didn't work for me.  Make sure you get the thermal software running well or you might damage your system.

I use Ubuntu 20 lts and it seems to be working Ok except external monitors that show a garbage window!  Not sure if that's a driver issue or a hardware one.

Re:P15 and P17 running Linux

So I am testing now using a P17 with a T1000 GPU card and running Fedora 33 and I am having no issues with using an external display via HDMI.  My main screen is only 2K and the external is a 4K and I can set any resolution I have tried with no issues.  Also Alex238 the garbage we see running Ubuntu does not seem to be there.  This is running using the nouveau driver and not the NVidia proprietary driver

In my case I cannot use Nuveau as I need access to the CUDA layer, plus the Nuveau doesn't perform very well in general.

A new NVIDIA driver was just released.  quick question, do you know if the UBUNTU non LTS version will setup the lenovo repos and the custom drivers/configuration that are setup automatically with the LTS?

thx,

alex

Re:P15 and P17 running Linux

Using the Driver Manager (DM) in Linux Mint, I tried the Nouveau driver. Nothing on external monitor except for the cursor.

The DM has three choices under Nvidia: 460.56, nouveau, and 450.102.04. In addition to 460.56 and 450, I have tried the latest 460.73.01. All three work as previously indicated: the maximum resolution available for the external Dell U2711 monitor (2560x1440) is 1920x1080.

Based on this thread, it appears to me that the culprit is the Nvidia drivers. What is the protocol? Are the users expected to post on the Nvidia site, or are Nvidia people aware of these issues already and working with Lenovo to fix them?

Re:P15 and P17 running Linux

for how much I hate Apple, this might be a good reason to consider one of these machines for a laptop. As of today the external screen on my P17 is still not working (the new machines will arrive and this 2020 is still not working :-). I get a get a new machine every year and this is the first time I did run into a problem like this. I can deal with little things that are not working, but the display is not acceptable! I am still puzzled how for example other things are not working either. I have a P52 that with the Lenovo thunderbolt dock is not working, you need to unplug, replug, etc...and then it works. However, if I use an HP docking station it works flawlessly! Why?? :-) sometime I wonder I think their QA is strictly looking at some narrow testing parameters (maybe for costs?) and they just push things out that are not working if you change something else. Whatever, I am frustrated.

Re:P15 and P17 running Linux

Changed connection to external monitor to a cable from USB-C (Thunderbolt) to Display Port on the monitor. 2560x1440 now appears on Dell U2711! My most important issue is now solved!

I am surprised that a direct connection via HDMI does not yield 2560x1440. I still think that this may be a driver issue. However, a $20 fix is ok at this point.

On another note, VMWare > Windows appears to be loading more quickly now. Not sure why, but that is another point of improvement.

Over and out for now.
