P15v fan constantly running if Thunderbolt connected

2021-02-05, 15:11 PM

I recently bought a P15v Gen 1 (20TQ-003RGE).

As much as I like the rest of the machine, there is one big issue I'm facing. As soon as I connect to my Thunderbolt 3 dock, the notebook's fan spins up to >2000 RPM - in complete idle ! This even happens if I have nothing connected to the dock!

What I tested / setup:

Everything up-to-date according to Lenovo Vantage.

  • different UEFI settings tested (Intel Speed management, TB DMA protection etc.) - no significant difference observed
  • OS: Windows 10 vs. Ubuntu Linux - slightly better under Windows 10
  • dock: tested two different TB docks (Lenovo and OWC), and a USB-C dock (Lenovo), all newest firmware - no significant difference observed
  • devices attached to the dock: one 4k monitor at 60Hz + keyboard + mouse vs. nothing at all - no significant difference observed

If I have nothing connected via TB3, everything is fine. In battery mode as well as with mains connected. I can even have a 4k monitor attached via HDMI without noticeable increase in fan speed. Of course, fan speed goes up if I do computationally intensive work - but in a normal fashion as I would expect, considering the 45W TDP of the CPU + that of the GPU.

Anybody experiencing a similar issue? The fan noise gets really annoying, even at very moderate load (web browsing etc.), which my old T460 performs without making any sound. Considering the price point of the P15v, this is unacceptable.

Hi Lorenzo_Lenovo,

thanks for your reply! I just double-checkted, everything is up-to-date. UEFI/BIOS 1.11 (2020-12-17) and ME FW 14.0.45.1389.

Now I even checked different Thunderbolt cables... makes no difference of course ^^

cheers

Update after another FW update: The problem still prevails!

Fan starts spinning even if I attach a simple USB Hub to the Thunderbolt connector.

I ended up avoiding to use the TB3 connector whenever I can. Rest of the notebook is great so I kept it. But won't recommend it.

Hi Lorenzo_Lenovo,

I really appreciate you coming back to this. I've installed the fw update you linked. Honestly, under Windows, now I can't really tell if the fan rpm is still related to the TB being in use or not. The fan becomes noisy every few minutes in plain idle anyways, no matter if I use the TB port or not. I stopped using the TB docking station altogether.

On Ubuntu Linux, the machine is much more quiet, maybe because the OS itself runs more efficient. This is what I use most of the time right now and I'm fine with that.

Hi Mr. Fuppes, thank you. Yes I get the same when opening the Intel App. The reason I am asking is it appeared in past in my systray just like you see in the picture where the USB drive appears. After trying to upgrade the dock firmware and drivers (to the latest version) using Lenovo Vantage, which failed at 85%, it disappeared. Later I was able to upgrade the firmware and drivers but it would not reappear. Reinstallation of the Intel App would not bring it back either. So yours has never appeared in systray?

Ones I am using now:

Drivers and Downloads

Driver Version
Driver for Thunderbolt Dock Gen 2 V10017
Firmware for Windows 10 (64-bit) V3.1.68

Yes, it never appeared in the sys tray, not that I noticed at least. However, I think I have the generation 1 model of the tb dock. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Btw. I used the tools from this site https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds506115 to update the dock fw. Worked pretty smoothly.
