P17 Thunderbolt 3 Dock Compatibility

2020-12-31, 23:09 PM

Comparing these two docking options for my P17 Gen 1:

40AN0135US: Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2, 135 W

40ANY230US: Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2

The difference is the power adapter and cables included with the dock (dock is the same for both).

Will the 135W dock charge my P17 through the thunderbolt cable  if I plug both the 135w and 170w power adapters into the dock?

I'm also looking for an appropriate dock for my  P17 MWS. Is it necessary to buy the 230W docking station in order to charge the laptop or will the 135W dock work? Alternatively, are there any aftermarket docks that can be suggested?

@Nolasteve & @jtluttrell The maximum charging power of the 135 W version is 90 W. 40AN0135US (Interesting, since the Thunderbolt (USB-C) specification allows only for a maximum power delivery of 65 W.)

The P17 uses a 170 W power adapter. It might be enough, to run idle, but will discharge your battery when it needs more power.

Note also that the 135 W version might only come with a Thunderbolt 3 cable, not the dual connection cable with the additional Lenovo connector. (See image below.)

@Nolasteve

About buying the 135 W version and using it with two adapters. I believe they are indeed the same dock and your idea should work.

If it does come with only the Thunderbolt 3 cable, you'll have to keep using your 170 W connector in your laptop.

If it comes with the double Lenovo and Thunderbolt cable you can connect your 170 W adapter to the "170 W" connector, this should be used to power your laptop. Then connect the supplied adapter to the "65/135 W" connector to supply power to the dock and connected peripherals.

@jtluttrell Yes you should use the 230 W version of the dock for your laptop, unless you want to try Nolasteve's idea and use two power-bricks...

Considering other docks, I do not have any experience there. Even with this Lenovo dock I'm experiencing some issues with connection loss to my display. Thunderbolt is not as plug-and-play as usb, yet. If you do not need the charging or Thunderbolt, you can look for a more general usb-c dock.

Thank you for the reply, Farway.
Part of the reason I wanted to get this model was to essentially have a backup AC Supply, so I can leave one in my bag and not be without one if I leave it at the office.

P17 Mehcanicl Dock

2021-01-11, 20:06 PM

Hello, Does anyone know if they will me making a mechanical dock for the P17 like he did for the P52 ? The compatibility website doesn't even list this model yet:

https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/compatibilityFinder?menu-id=EXPLORE_COMPATIBLE

Any advice is appreciated as I will need to replace 4 mechanical docks with ThunderBolt if the P52 dock doesn't fit. I prefer the old school mechanical docking stations.

Thanks,

Brad

Hello,

I do not have a ThinkPad P17, but from looking at the product sheet, it does not have a connector on the bottom for a mechanical dock, and the only dock shown on its datasheet is the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2.

Re:P17 Thunderbolt 3 Dock Compatibility

I ordered 4 of the P17 MWS and first purchased the USB-C Dock Gen 2 (60 watt brick), obviously, it did not charge. The Lenovo rep said, "ORDER THE ThinkPad Hybrid USB-C  ONE IT WILL SURELY WORK." So I picked up 8 of them for our office, surprise, the do not charge the laptop. Can you please explain the options to me again? I have a 230W brick with my laptop, so what can I do? Or is there a 230W dock I can buy to just make this problem go away without a workaround.

Re:P17 Thunderbolt 3 Dock Compatibility

How about this idea... (not Lenovo-based)

I originally outfitted my own P17 with this TOTU 13-in-1 USB-C hub/dongle. It supports USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gb/s) and has lots of assorted ports. I've now used several, one on a P73, one on a P17, and one on an X1 Yoga 4th Gen. Works great, and is very portable. The P17 and P73 laptops get power from its own power supply brick, and delivers power to the TOTU for any devices connected to its ports. The Yoga's power requirement is just 65W and does not have a standalone power port but rather gets it through one of the USB-C (PD) ports, so I've plugged its charger into the TOTU which then delivers power to the Yoga.  Priced right, at $70.

Alternatively, just this week I've now just bought another much more expensive TB3 (40Gb/s) "docking station" from Hiearcool.  $200. Again, really a USB-C hub/dongle, this one supports USB 4.0 Thunderbolt 3 (40Gb/s). There are TWO USB-C TB3 ports, once of which is intended to connect to the laptop and the second available for a TB3 device (e.g. 8K @ 60Hz monitor, or perhaps USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 20Gb/s external portable SSD like this one from Sandisk). The dock has its own power brick, providing 100W through a DC power connector. You'd once again connect the P17's own power brick to the laptop via its own power port, and the dock's charger to its own power port.

The Hiearcool dock includes a .7M TB3 USB-C cable for connecting to the laptop, but that's a bit short for convenience and flexibility. So I also bought a separate 1M TB3 cable just in case. All this just arrived yesterday, so I haven't had a chance to test it out yet.  Can't vouch for it yet, as I can for the TOTU which is fine but limited to 10Gb/s.

My whole thing is that I don’t want to lug the power brick from home to the office, I want my team to just have a dock at home and one at work and just plug that in and voila! Power and monitors!
