P43S with 3 External Monitors

2020-04-20, 21:39 PM

The P43S PSREF indicates "Supports 3 independent displays", but "independent" is unfortunately vague. Specifically, related to whether the laptop's screen must be one of those 3.

So wondering if a P43S, with the Thinkpad Workstation Dock Gen 2 (40ANY230US), makes it possible to have either

    * Laptop display off, 2 external displays via the doc, one via the Laptop HDMI port; or

    * (even) All 4 displays on (i.e., laptop + 3 external).

as opposed to the other possible interpretation of only supporting Laptop screen + 2 external displays via dock.

I see a very similar question already asked here, but it looks like it's gone unanswered since last August.

Thanks for any help...

Hi! Well at around 2009 I had to solve that issue for a very important client, to setup 3 monitors for his Thinkpad. I got a headache because using a docking station I just got 2 externa monitors working, but finally searching online and talking with some folks I solved it using an extra USB to VGA video card and I got my 3 monitor working perfect. Make sure is a usb video card and not just a usb to VGA adapter. Hope you can try and it work for you. Let others know when you solve it.

Thanks Juan...

Yes, always fun adding on more outboard devices than originally imagined ;-)

It sounds like we've had a similar experience over the years with different models tolerating (or not) "too many" monitors.  It usually hinged on whether the on-board video was even able to handle n+1 monitors (regardless of connection).

In this case, the question is specific to the P43s(/P53s), which I'm hoping someone has one of those in hand can answer...

  1. Is the HDMI port on the laptop still usable when the 40ANY230US TB3 dock has 2 displays active in it?  Versus plugging in the doc disabling the laptop HDMI port.

  2. When the P43s PSREF says "3 independent monitors supported", does the Laptop display have to be one of those 3?  So does "independent" really mean "external"?  And the real max configuration is which one of:

          a. 3 external monitors + Laptop display off (3 total)

          b. 3 external monitors + Laptop display (4 total)

          c. 2 external monitors + Laptop display (3 total)

Thanks...

Hello,

The scenario mentioned in the PSREF is for the internal display plus two external displays.  However, you may be able to use three external displays if you disable the P43s' internal display.

While it is not the same type of system, I have run three external monitors using a ThinkPad T440p (Nvidia GPU-equipped model) with its internal LCD panel disabled.

Aryeh:

It's encouraging as well that the T440p PSREF uses exactly the same "supports three independent displays" wording as do the P43s and P53s PSREFs.

The 3 external with laptop panel off scenario is the one I was hoping to hear that someone had running.

Thank you very much for the info… (BTW, "may" noted :-))

I'll add here when the P43s arrives & can confirm the setup.
