P43s 1802 unauthorized network card is plugged in 8087/07F5

2019-11-15, 6:07 AM

I purchased this P43s at the end of September from Lenovo - Direct. I bought it with the Fibocom WWAN. 48 hours ago I was working just fine. I attempted to start my computer about 4 hours ago, 'unplugged' and I get hit with this POST error ending in 8087/07F5

NO network cards have been modified. All are factory. There are no third part cards in the machine.

I have the Thinkpad USB-C Gen 2 dock. If I'm plugged into that, the machine boots fine. It's when i'm not plugged into the dock that the machine doesn't boot. I did a firmware update on the dock a couple days ago, I can't remember if it was before I was using my laptop on tuesday or not. https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/options/thinkpad_usb-c_dock_gen2_fw_v1.0.3.08281_readme_modify.txt

During the dock firmware update, the system glitched a little bit.

I did a firmware update for TrackPoint earlier: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p43s-type-20rh-20rj/20rh/20rhcto1ww/pf13lv2y/downloads/DS505655    || https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n20g903w.txt

I just attempted to update the Thunderbolt 3 firmware but that didn't take. I'm still at version 18. https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2ith02w.txt

I followed the instructions to reset the CMOS. The only thing I achieved here was setting the time. Not a fix. : https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/POST-error-1804-Unauthorized-network-card-is-plugged-in/ta-p/243510

I have the dock plugged into the Thunderbolt port, and another monitor plugged into the HDMI port to get 2 monitors at 2560x1440 @ 60 Hz. I just got an RMA for the Thinkpad USB-C Gen 2 dock to return it for the Hybrid USB-C and USB-A dock so I can have both monitors plugged into the dock. I have to send it back tomorrow. PLEASE HELP!!

Re: P43s 1802 unauthorized network card is plugged in 8087/07F5

2019-11-15, 7:08 AM

Ok, so I just tried updating the Thunderbolt Firmware again and I'm still at NVM Firmware Version 18.

I attempted to move the dock into the USB-C port that the regular charger goes in and boot the computer and it stopped at POST.

The computer does boot if the USB-C Gen 2 dock is plugged into the Thunderbolt port.

Since I can get into Windows when the dock is plugged in, I boot the computer then unplug the dock then attempted to do the firmware upgrade.

Re: P43s 1802 unauthorized network card is plugged in 8087/07F5

2019-11-15, 7:40 AM

USB IDs vid_8087&pid_07F5 are Fibocom wwan modem related. It's standard Fibocom's flash loader utility (virtual device). Actually Intel is a manufacturer of this wwan modem and its chipset, so, you see 8087 as a Vendor ID. Other devices and their fw - dock, touchpad etc - aren't a source of the issue. This virtual device isn't white listed in the BIOS, so, the latter prevents to boot the laptop with error.

Flash loader utility appearance during POST means something is wrong with modem and its communication with the host during initialization. In most case the error with such virtual device (flash loader utility) is caused by the modem firmware - it might be corrupted, the modem needs/waits the fw will be (re)loaded, the modem can't be initialized, the modem is "suspended", "freezed up" by electric potential on some circuits etc.

Possible way to troubleshoot is to reset the modem then check out its fw version and update it. Since the laptop cant boot try to reset its power circuits by the power button holding during 20...30 seconds. Note: the AC charger (!) and internal battery (!) must be unplugged before this action performing. So, unfortunately, since the laptop isn't able to boot and enter the BIOS Setup for internal battery disabling, the laptop disassembling might be needed to disconnect internal battery. In this case temporary removing the modem for several minutes might help too.

Re: P43s 1802 unauthorized network card is plugged in 8087/07F5

The Intel Apline Thunderbolt update came down via Lenovo Vantage. I attempted to run the install through that. After that Finished, I rebooted and got hit with the error again. After plugging my dock into the Thunderbolt port and getting back into Windows, I ran System Update again in Lenovo Vantage. The Thunderbolt update is still there.

BTW, right clicking on that Intel USB Loader in Device Manager and then clicking uninstall didn't help.

I just came across the post at https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/Fibocom-L850-GL-WWAN-Problems-on-Multiple-T480s-Laptops/td-p/4339294

It has VID_8087&PID_07F5 in the post.

I checked lenovo vantage and it updated the Fibocom L850-GL Common Driver Package.

I think I have an older download of this package. Can I reverse flashback the firmware?

I use the WWAN, I have it on Verizon.
