P50 Bricked by BIOS update

2020-09-06, 10:07 AM

My P50 prompted me to update the BIOS yesterday. I've done this several times since I got the machine, so didn't really think much of it.

It went through the motions and booted into the SCT Flash utility. It got about a little way through the update and just stopped. I left it for several hours, but it wasn't going any further. I couldn't turn the machine off with a long press of the power button, it just beeped at me. I don't recall the beep pattern though. I eventually had to pull the battery.

Powered the machine back up, and now just get a blank screen and two sets of 5 beeps. It then powers off after a short while.

Looks like the update has wiped/corrupted the BIOS, and I now have an expensive brick. Warranty expired in December 2019, so can't go down that route. It appears the Lenovo solution is to replace the system board, which I assume is quite expensive.

Are there any other options open to me? Is it possible to flash the BIOS EEPROM directly?
