P50 Configured with 3 Hard Drives (2 PCIe 1 HDD) And No RAID UK

2016-03-31, 14:18 PM

Hi Guys,

Been out of the Lenovo fold a while, can't say it's good to be back.

Ordered a fully loaded P50 from Lenovo UK (Digital River) with 3 hard drives of varying technologies.

Lets forget the shambles that is the WWAN configuration, the unit was configured with 3 drives and I've just received it and NO RAID option is available to me (apparently Lenovo silently removed the RAID configuration option from the Lenovo UK sales team).

So now this unit has to go back be refunded and then re-ordered.

This is why I left Lenovo and went to Apple, came back due to the new machines and it's just the same.

Not overly happy at the moment, between the WWAN and now this, unsatisified customer.

Also as an adition, it seems a bit sluggish for a Xeon with 32gb of ram and NVMe

And finally the 4k screen has terrible bleed around the edges and isn't that bright IMO.

Overall not impressed.

Need this sorted.

Hi DangerMouse,

I can understand why you're not impressed, neither am I.

Did you order the laptop with ECC RAM, considering you ordered a Xeon?

You can apparently buy the WWAN module afterwards and install it yourself. The hardware validation has been completed, software certification is still missing, but Lenovo is working on this.

What do you otherwise think of your 4K screen - bad viewing angles, darkened right side of screen, etc. ?

Yeah got ECC but haven't even bothered to load up a proper OS as the RAID config is disabled

Thats good on the WWAN card, will wait until this one goes back and see where we go from there.

The screen has TERRIBLE bleeding towards the bottom left of it, and mild bleeding elsewhere - if you can look past that which I can't then its ok, the Windows scaling issues are not Lenovo's issue.

Might even get a refund and look elsewhere to be honest.

I can certainly feel your frustration. It's not a purchase you're going to be satisfied with in the end I think, and the doubts of whether one should really settle and load everything up on it properly are the same doubts I had and still have.

I too am/was very disappointed in the lack of RAID options. No matter how much money you were able to pay them, such an option was not possible. Kind of insane.

What are you refund/return options? If all else fail, contact the local support and see what they think of the screen. To me, something like what you describe should be unheard of in a laptop of that price range.

Its going back for a refund.

Not sure if the next unit will be a P50 or not.

The BIOS/RAID issue has really got under my skin.

I mean what kind of company takes an option away from the BIOS even when the machines are configured from the factory in a way that needs that option.

Sigh, getting really tired of Lenovo.

Dangermouse,

Welcome back - apologies for the late reply.

I would contact support and get a ticket just to log the initial issues with the screen and then, if the light bleed is worrisome, then I would see if the unit could be replaced.   As noted, for a premium, high spec system, it should meet your expectations.

I'll see what I can find out on the Raid.  If this is indeed a Geo / market decision on the offering, I definitely want to get your feedback on to the right people to consider this.

Best regards,

Mark

Digital River wanted me to return it (Lenovo UK Shop)

So thats what I've done.

Whether I re-order or not is another matter between the screen and the raid and the WWAN I'm a bit scarred to be honest.

What are your thoughts Mark ?

Dear Mark,

thanks for the effort.

An official statement from Lenovo would be appreciated.

Perhaps also on the ECC Ram issue.

Best regards,
