Re: P50: Cracked Palmrest Repair

2017-02-13, 7:01 AM

I live in the UK.

I was considering buying a P50 as the reviews on the internet seem good.

A forum member signposted me to this thread.

Considering possible issues with cracked palm rests, I'm now dissuaded from buying.

I travel a great deal overseas, and the laptop would need to be durable, which is why I purchased a T500 nine years ago (this laptop now needs replacing).

Am I right in saying that most of the issues with cracked palm rests originate from the USA (North America)?

Can Lenovo inform me if this issue is also prevalent in machines purchased in Europe?

Lenovo really need to admit that this issue is a design fault or production issue rather than avoiding to admit there's a problem. There will be many potential customers looking to purchase a P50, but that will be put off due to the cracked palm rest issue and Lenovo's obvious poor support of customers that have experienced this problem.

Any feedback from Lenovo would be interesting.

Jamie

If I lay a straightedge across my P50 horizontally left to right, I observe the following:

1) Positioned 1/2 inch or more in front of the fingerprint reader, it is level all the way across.

2) Positioned back closer to the FP reader or over the reader itself, it is NOT level.  The high-point clearly is the left edge of the FP reader, which acts as a fulcrum for the straightedge to tip left or right.

With the straightedge positioned front to back:

3) Positioned front to back, the high area runs from 1/2 inch right of the FP reader to  1-1/2 inches left of the FP reader. Once again, the highest point is directly over the left edge of the FP reader.

No cracks here yet.  But it is obvious that the area described above is under pressure.  And of course most of the cracks pictured in this thread originate exactly from that high upper left edge of the FP reader.  I suppose it is only a matter of time before it happens to my P50.

It seems to me that there would have to be a problem with both the fit AND the material to create this problem.

Does the crack start out small, as a hairline? Does it grow over time -->

Exactly yes. On the beginning we thought that it is only a scratch, not a crack.

Does the crack just appear one day out of nowhere or after prolonged periods of typing? -->

It appeared unexpectedly.

How long was the system in use before the crack appeared? -->

About 5 weeks.

What types of environmental factors has the system been exposed to? Unusually high or low temps? High or low humidity? -->

Home & Office - about 20-24 oC.

Outside (carried in a bag) - -5...5 oC

Has the system been carried around daily? -->

Has it been stationary on a desk or within a home or office

Carried around daily. After working hours I was taking it to home.

Any other thoughts? -->+

it is possible that the housing shrinkage factor of metal to give ruptures the plastic part?

It looks like that I'm another lucky man who bought a very expensive laptop made with very poor materials. I bought the P50 in December 2016 and now I discovered that it is cracking nearby the fingerprint sensor.

It is unbelievable and unacceptable. I'M VERY DISAPPOINTED. This means that these company is using materials with poor quality. Is anyone here that had a chance to get the laptot reparied or the money back?
