Re: P50 Hard disk drive cable

2016-03-14, 1:53 AM

Of course, the main concern of this corporation will be whether shifting a $9.00 cable through the factory will be better for business than funelling every user down the path of aquiring a 2nd new m.2 drive and caddy and mirroring the data from their old mechanical HDDs.

After that hurdle has been jumped, all users will be happy and the corporation will have more cash.

If it was simply a matter of customer satisfaction, the cable would be included or sent for free after purchase.

The bean-counters rule.

And that is probably why they have been able to deliver such a quiet, slim, light, powerful, cool-running workstation (albeit with a clicky speaker and a hole where you want to put your old hard drive).

Wait long enough and you'll want an m.2 pcie, acquired for a few dollars, with a mirror on it of your old cylindrical platters.

Oh they are certainly aware, and I agree this could/should have absolutely been handled better up front.  As I understand it, there are quite a few safety/certification issues that are being chased at this point.  It's not an issue with creating parts, but rather getting everything lined up to be able to sell them together as options, and to do so in all necessary geographies.  As I said, there's a lot of gruntwork that goes on behind the scenes to make this happen that most people aren't aware of.

I wonder why the approach is to sell this as an "option kit" rather than a CRU service kit! The later would require no additional certifications as the parts are already described as  level 3 parts within the main machine assembly. This would be no different than supplying a misc. parts kit (screws, screw covers, etc) through the service organization. Certainly, the delivery path would be both defined and established. I suspect such a kit has to be already defined for field service support.

I'd even be willing to buy the 2.5" SATA Drive with it. Are there any that include the tray and or cables?

Please let us know how the install of a 2.5" drive works out without the rubber bracket. At first glance, I couldn't spot any real issues, but I'm curious about your experience.

that sounds reasonable priced in UK.  our internal lenovo authorized repair department looked those FRU up in the database couple weeks ago, it will cost $53 USD for that HDD cable.

the SSD tray costs $20.50 through lenovo parts, twice as much as consumer can get online directly from lenovo

some thing is not right in the tech shop channel.

Valid point.  I would think one of two possibilities exist:

   - FRU kit with all the cables in question

   - Individual FRUs set up for each cable

Best I can do is ask the question.  The Thinkpad structure of things is significantly different than what we normally do on ThinkStation, so finding the info is a bit more challenging.

sam850 fits fine, cable works.  I think it does need a little padding. Thin plastic sheet, from an old Thinkpad HDD tray, a couple of thin soft plastic strips along the sides just so it sits tight.  Just fine.    Just so it does not rattle!    It is upto the individual I think.

Be/go gently!!
