P50 Keyboard Problem - Shift, t, y, backspace, volume keys stop working

2020-04-16, 12:30 PM

Howdy all,

I've seen this problem as a recurring theme in older forums, but have never seen a resolution. I have a P50 with Windows 10. Occasionally, the left Shift, t, y, backspace, and volume keys stop working. I checked the keyboard driver and Windows says I'm running the "best one available" - something from 2006. At times, the dead keys will come back to life. At other times, I re-start several times. This does not seem to be hardware related, but I'll take suggestions if you have them.
In the current COVID-19 crisis, it will be particularly difficult for me to swap out hardware if it requires a full system change. We're talking about a work laptop with a ton of data (and a home DSL connection with very poor internet). I'm almost considering buying a USB keyboard and living with that until I can work things out.
Thanks!
Ken

These things are usually hardware, especially if you have rebooted and have symptoms continur after the reboot.  When having the problem, I would reboot into the BIOS and see if the keys work there.  You can also try this site, which I use (free):

https://www.keyboardtester.com/

The keyboard swap on the P50 is not terribly hard.  You remove the battery, loosen 6 captive screws to remove the bottom cover, and then there are 3 keyboard screws.

Here is the manual:

Thanks, Rich.

When the keyboard dies, the test website shows that those keys are not working.
Also, I found that I can use the "virtual keyboard" on my system and those virtual keys work when the real keys do not. I'm not sure that is indicative of anything, but it's a data point.

I suppose this points more to a hardware problem. I'll try to hook up with our IT folks and see if I can get myself a new keyboard to swap in.

Hello,

Have you tried booting the computer from a Linux Live CD/DVD/USB to see if the keys on the keyboard disappear when an entirely different operating system is run?  If the problem does occur during that, I would suspect a hardware issue of some kind.

I'm basically having the same exact problem as you.  Did you manage to fix it?  Was it a hardware problem?

Issues with a keyboard is a pain. I was having two issues with P50's keyboard myself. After long wait, I went for clean-install of Windows and pretty-much everything is fine now.

I used Lenovo USB Recovery tool to download the factory image (was around 14.5GB) and used the tool to make USB recovery out of 32GB pendrive (tried with 16GB pendrive but was getting error)

So, try to do a complete backup, double-check for all the important stuff for backup. And use the USB recovery tool. This will take a considerable time as compared to just installing Windows and Lenovo drivers separately.

If not able to create backup, then try moving/copying every important thing to separate partition (other than C: drive) and proceed to reinstall Windows using either Lenovo tool or Windows bootable Image.

Let's see what happens. Good Luck!

So I ended up ordering another OEM keyboard off Ebay that was sourced from a working P50 unit and that fixed the problem.
