P50/ P70: Power up, POST and Fingerprint Authentication - Help!

2016-03-05, 15:16 PM

Could someone help here!   Not sure if this is normal behaviour, a BIOS misconfiguration, some other issue or not!

  1. It seems like my startup (P50) goes through post twice, I get the Lenovo logo come up twice, a few seconds between each.   On the second Lenovo Logo I get always get the option to enter Set-UP.

  2. With Fingerprint power on and Windows  (Win10Pro) authentication I have to authenticate with the reader twice, once at power up and one again at the Windows login. With finger print authentication I though this only happens once at power up.

Is this all normal ??

My P70 does the same thing with the double Lenovo logo at post. Takes twice as long to boot as it should. Not sure about having to do 2 fingerprints.

1) Same here
2) Works for me. Once authenticated at boot (twice), Windows 10 does not ask for the 3rd time and just sign ins.

Also have another issue (which according to Google is fairly common and affects other laptops with other fingerprint readers):

3) when waking up from sleep, and getting to Windows logon screen, the fingerprint reader light isn't glowing, and the reader does not work. Putting it to sleep again, and waking up, makes it working.

My P70 does the same thing with the double Lenovo logo at post after I upgraded to the latest BIOS. It takes twice as long to boot as well.  With the old BIOS version 1.15 I didn't have this problem.

I'm still on 1.15 and it's still doing it.

I've had my machine about 3 weeks but didn't upgrade the bios yet. I saw it a few days ago when it came out but decided to give it a few days. I may end up sending this machine back anyway. If I keep it I'll probably update it next week.

All, thanks for the replies.    I figured it had changed, the BIOS is @ 19.   The P50 is beginning to settle now.
I now run 2 Sam950's.  I ordered the recoverymedia which came on a USB, and essentially restored and built from there.
I had to. I had weird issues with the supplied build on the 951:

  • the P50 ran real, real slow, nothing like W10Pro should boot, infact W7Pro boot was faster!
  • everytime I touched the BIOS, (even without!!) on restarts I'd subsequently get a stalled black screen, needed to powerdown and restart but even that often failed to work unless I had 2 boot devices configured!!!, occured with BIOS 15 and 19.  It was terrible! really!
  • docking/undocking unstable
  • multi monitors unpredictable if they came alive!
  • applications ran very, very slow too, the whole thing was just bad.
  • tried to install an ericsson WWAN card but the BIOS rejected it, I figured it would, but still worth a try!  Need a date for the EM7455, 8 weeks I understand!

Anyway as I said, since the fresh rebuild from the reovery media its pretty good, responsive, it works!, and boot is OK 30 seconds to the point a second fingerprint (Windows auth) is needed.  20 seconds without the reader configured.

Re: P50/ P70: Power up, POST and Fingerprint Authentication - Help!

Think Engineering is asking for feedback to assist with investigating customer reports that P50 and P70 ThinkPads are experiencing part of the boot up process twice upon start up, with the Lenovo logo seen twice.

If your ThinkPad is impacted, please provide the following information:

[ BIOS Setup information ]

  • UEFI BIOS version and Embedded Controller Version
  • ME Firmware Version
  • Windows Version ( SKU )
  • Memory Configuration (# of DIMM, size, ECC?)
  • CPU information

[ Storage Configuration ]

  • RAID or Non-RAID?
  • How many SSD/HDD are attached?
  • Is the HDD password set?

[ Others ]

  • Any optional devices attached?

Thank you,

 [ BIOS Setup information]

  • UEFI BIOS version and Embedded Controller Version – 1.19, 1.12 respectfully
  • ME Firmware Version – 11.0.0.1202
  • Windows Version ( SKU ) – Windows10Pro (Preloaded)  now@ 1511, OS:10586.122
  • Memory Configuration - 16 x 4 DIMM, 64GB, Non-ECC
  • CPU information – Intel Xeon E3-1535M v5

[ Storage Configuration ]

  • Non-RAID 2 x Sam950 512’s M.2 PCIe, 1 x Sam850 1GB SSD. These are customer fit.  Replaced Lenovo Sam951 although hardware seems OK build was problematic.
  • How many SSD/HDD are attached - 3 (2 x SSD M2PCIe, 1 x SSD SATA)
  • Set HDD password - No, not any more, Sam 950 not yet supported!!

[ Others ]

  • As appropriate! Docking station, 1 x monitor (Lenovo).

Lenovo Solution Centre shows PCIe hardware errors, due to Sam950’s.  Lenovo is this as expected???

Also those black screens and hang at boot, could these be related???

Let me know if you need anything else.
