Re: P50/ P70: Power up, POST and Fingerprint Authentication - Help!

Yeah I'm glad to see they're being proactive with this. It's a flagship machine and it needs to perform like it. I'm guessing they'll be able to sort it out soon.

It happens on my P70 (BIOS level 1.18) and no HDD password is set, just the Power-on password.

I'm also getting a double BIOS screen fairly frequently, and sometimes it never gets to BIOS screen, just remains black. Usually a hard-power down and restart fixes it.

P70 Thinkpad

BIOS: 1.19

CPU: Xeon 1505M

RAM: 32GB non-ECC

HDD: Toshiba 500GB 7200RPM that came with it

No hard drive password

No pre-boot authentication. Windows 10 Authentication only.

I always thought it was because some external USB devices were plugged in, but that might be voodoo magic that I'm talking about.

Are you using the Windows 10 Hello function? Try this:

1. Go into the BIOS configuration and clear the fingerprints.

2. Go into the Windows 10 Hello settings and clear all finger prints

3. Shutdown the P70 all the way

4. Boot the system

5. Go to settings, security, Windows 10 Hello

6. Go through the fingerprint process

The system should now boot all the way w/o stopping except for fingerprint authentication.

Yes, I'm using Windows 10 Hello with fingerprints, but the double BIOS issue occurs before that. I don't have pre-boot authentication setup. I turned that off in BIOS a while ago.

Did you try what I suggested? The issue is with the Windows Boot Manager. Try the procedure. It made my double boot issue go away.

Re: P50/ P70: Power up, POST and Fingerprint Authentication - Help!

2016-03-24, 13:18 PM

Think Engineering has provided a temporary workaround to resolve the double POST experienced during boot up on P50 and P70 ThinkPads.

The workaround requires the I/O Port Access to be disabled in BIOS.

  1. Reboot the system and press F1 to enter BIOS Setup
  2. Change to “Security” page
  3. Change to “I/O Port Access” section
  4. Scroll down to “Wireless WAN”, press Enter, and then set to “Disabled” as shown
  5. Press F10 to Save and Exit

The root cause is being confirmed and Think Engineering is working on a permanent fix that will be provided via BIOS update.

Thank you,

Hi Amy

I have tried this resolution, but I still seem to have a double boot, although the second boot seems a great deal quicker than before.  I will PM you a link to a video of the boot after the applying the change.

Regards

Andrew

Andrew,

I'm sorry to hear the workaround did not resolve the double POST boot up.

I've forwarded the link you kindly provided to Think Engineering to review.

Thank you for your feedback. It is appreciated.
