Re: P50/P70: Upgrading with WWAN later won't be possible anyway?

2016-03-12, 21:28 PM

I'm pretty sure I've made my mind up. I'll contact support in Denmark on Monday. If they cannot guarantee that buying the supposedly supported WWAN card through Lenovo later to use with the P50 is going to work, then I'll return my P50 immediately for a refund. This, combined with the semi-annoying 4K screen and no word on how to test that ECC works, would make this choice even easier to make. Sorry, but not for $4000.

I've messaged a few Lenovo staff - no reply as of yet though so I'm quite concerned.

Yeah, incredible, isn't it? Maybe it is because we are non-US residents and currently feel that the P50 at certain points are the "emperor's new clothes".

Fwiw I ordered an EM7345 just for testing (and I'm returning it) and as said earlier it didn't boot and only printed an error about the card being unsupported before even printing the bios menu.

What's weird is that there are several laptops with the EM7455 option like the P50s or the last yoga, but the option is still missing for the P50 and it still isn't available standalone.

For curiosity, were you able to order and experiment with an authentic Lenovo version of the EM7455 or a regular Sierra-branded one?

Hi Keruspe,

Thanks for the update. I think it can be expected that the EM7345 wouldn't work, but you testing confirms that at least work has been done within the embedded controller software to detect and validate WWAN.

The products with the EM7455 you mention might not use a mini-PCI-e  card like the P50 is supposed to, it might be integrated directly on the motherboard to save height.

Lenovo is in the process of qualifying the Sierra Wireless EM7455 WWAN card as a CRU part for P50 and P70 ThinkPads.

While no release date yet exists for the release of EM7455, hardware qualification has been completed, and software qualification is underway.

I will post again when I receive an update.

Thank you,

Hi Amy,

Thanks a lot for your reply, it is highly appreciated. It is indeed good news. I'll send you a PM in a few moments, as I suspect this is a question that you cannot reply to "in open public".

Still no updates regarding this matter?

My P50 will be arriving tomorrow and I have a huge interest on this.

Hi,

My local replacement parts department stocks the EM7455 and I was told from their compatibility verification system that the module was listed for the P50 configurations starting with 20EN*/20EQ*/20FK*. I haven't bought it yet, even though I'm sure it will work, but I will wait until the software certification has been completed.

Remember that the EM7544 has been type approved for P50/P70 long ago - ALSO for systems where it is post-installed, when antennas and cables are already present. When you ordered the P50 the configuration on the order confirmation that WWAN cables are already included.
