P50 Touchpad middle mouse button & Gestures not working

2020-10-17, 0:51 AM

Hi.

I have a P50, and starting today, every time I use the lower Middle Mouse Button, my mouse loses focus on the window (goes to the desktop?) and I cannot click on anything until such time as I use ctrl+esc to bring up the start menu.

System restore didn't fix it.

Also, all gestures died.

I tried uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling the newest version of the driver (19.3.4.219).  It wasn't fixed.

I followed this guide to make sure I had the correct values in the correct spaces.

I then uninstalled the synaptics driver again. I even uninstalled the PS/2 mouse from device manager and reset the BIOS (f9+f10), then reinstalled the synaptics mouse driver but now it takes forever to switch into scroll mode and refuses to middle-click.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am at my wits end.

At least now my mouse isn't losing focus, but I still have no middle-mouse button, and no gestures.

I am so used to gesture scrolling that lacking it is bugging me.  It worked perfectly 17 hours ago.

If worst comes to worst, i can live without scrolling or gestures, but when i reset the BIOS, my computer now BEEPS and resets whenever i have my mouse dongle plugged in, which is also bad--any help with this would also be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

PS: as of right now, the middle mouse button does nothing--except it seems sometimes that when it is pressed, and i move my mouse over something (like the taskbar), that item won't respond (in the taskbar's case it will not unhide when i hover over it, and no mouse buttons are clickable.)

I also tried doing what this post said and changing it from 8 to 1214. and it didn't work.

More weirdness.
When I push the lower Middle Mouse Button, nothing happens. However, as soon as I hit "Esc", i can Two-finger scroll, which used to be automatic. When I hit "esc" again, the two-finger scroll stops working.

However...
Until I hit Ctrl+Esc again, the mouse will not auto-show the taskbar etc or click anywhere, and as soon as i do hit Ctrl-Esc, the scroll gesture dies and becomes unusable until the next time I hit my MMB.  I was using the MMB a lot to open new tabs of things to look at on an online store when it quit working and started losing focus.

It also appears the loud BEEP and reset when trying to start my computer (it did it 3X, at which point I entered BIOS) might have gone away, even with my logitech dongle plugged in.  That was when I had uninstalled even the PS/2 mouse driver.

PPS: A couple of minutes ago: When trying to drag & drop files on my computer inside Win Explorer, nothing happened. I can right click>copy>right click>paste, and they transfer just fine.HOWEVER, if I turn off the Trackpad in "Mouse" settings (Control Panel>Mouse>Thinkpad), the drag & drop process works perfectly normally.

PPPS: Disregard the PPS, as drag+drop seems to be working now that the then-current transfer is over.

i really don't want to disassemble this that far, but the warranty is over.

Would https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Lenovo-Thinkpad-P50-P51-P70-P71-Touchpad-Clickpad-Trackpad-Left-Right-Key-/132753714744 work as a replacement button-strip if one of them is broken?

or do i need this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Lenovo-P50-P51-Touchpad-palmrest-SM20K08483-AP0Z6000400/254674042527

an hour or so ago, i was able to force the MMB to do anything when i pushed really hard on one spot... and then i could use gestures to scroll for the next few minutes until i hit esc. after this i had to hit ctrl+esc to enable the taskbar to show again.

Update: the gestures work but the button doesn't.  Am seriously considering swapping out the bezel for a new one; does anyone know how long of a process this might be?

I am kinda sorry to see you go through this post by yourself. But I will try my best as a good member here.

So, I tried to replicate your problem by pressing my lower Middle Mouse button on track-pad. And gesture's stopped working, with similar behavior as you described.

  • Have you or someone else, accidentally spilled liquid or something in the TouchPad?
  • Or there could be grit stuck under the button, which is keeping the actual button pressed and fooling the PC.

Unfortunately, since you have tried almost all software side of things, I would agree for you to go for disassembly and cleaning.

  • Try using compressed air-can first. Blow the air in-between button gaps. Use a vacuum maybe, carefully though.
  • Have you tried Lenovo Hardware Diagnoistics for TouchPad?
  • If this does not helps, then next option is to open the ThinkPad and take the TouchPad apart, clean, re-install and test.

Bezel part is not very difficult actually, you just need to be careful to not break the plastic locks. I can try guiding you maybe as I have taken apart and assembled several laptops (My P50 recently, to clean fans)

Thank you so very much for your response--it is extremely encouraging and appreciated! :-D

The fact that you get similar behavior by pressing your lower Middle Mouse Button is very heartening!

* I have not knowingly spilled anything on my touchpad in recent months, other than the usual random hair, dust etc. (I once spilled a few drops of drinking water on the keyboard, but nothing ill was observed over the next months.

* I will try the vacuum and compressed air.

* I have gone through the Lenovo Hardware Diagnostics as found on this page: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/fi/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-p50, and everything came back "Success."

I already have a break through the bezel at the left hinge due to it coming from the factory with the bezel not sitting correctly but "hiked up" about 1 mm. After about two years, this cracked all the way through. (This crack starts in the top of the bezel at the center of the hinge and moving diagonally downwards and to the right to end up exactly between the F1 & F2 keys.) I also have a stress fracture near the palmrest. As a result, I was considering purchasing a replacement bezel if I have to disassemble this one anyway.

I did not deactivate my AntiVirus (avast) before uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, if it matters.

I have read the Hardware Maintenance Manual and https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd101146, and it seems fairly straightforward except that I ought to get new screws. To be honest, the part that most scares me is shocking my SSD or breaking an irreplaceable part. However, I will certainly not turn down your guide and aid, especially if you have any tips etc on the disassembly or reassembly! (I have not even taken the back cover off before.)
