P50: WD SN750 1TB vs 970 Evo Plus 1 TB

2021-05-22, 23:04 PM

Hi, I am looking at buying a 1 TB NVME ssd for my P50, and have narrowed it to the WD SN750 1TB and the 970 Evo Plus 1 TB drives.  The SN750 is currently on a very good sale at B&H: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1451806-REG/wd_wdbrpg0010bnc_wrsn_1tb_black_sn750_nvme.html

a few questions please:
1) will this drive fit in my P50

2) how is the heat, ventilation, temperature throttling etc with regards to a enclosed space like the P50?  I have read reviews stating that it was redesigned to have a heatsink and while the heatsink obviously won't fit in my SSD tray (the NVME version of said tray), I am concerned that the non-heatsink version would get quite hot and slow down when the evo plus would not.  I don't want a space heater on my lap (more than the laptop already is).

3) is there any reason to spend the $20 extra for the Evo Plus? (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1454170-REG/samsung_mz_v7s1t0b_am_1tb_970_evo_plus.html)

4) Software: Is the Samsung software (Smart magician/Samsung's Dynamic Thermal Guard) any better or worse than the WD software?

Anything else that I should be aware of?

Thank you!

As an avid user of ThinkPad, we buy only Samsung SSD, starting with our OEM PM951 (X1 Carbon Gen 3, still being daily used!), PM961, PM981, and we have also bought units of Samsung EVO Plus 2 TB SSD. We also have units of Samsung 950 Pro series 2.5" SSD. All of these are fully functional; no a single failure.

Also, Samsung Magician software does a seamless transfer of your original SSD into your new Samsung EVO Plus SSD; we have tried it and it just works!

Not bad for a minimal premium price upcharge, for that peace of mind!

Disclaimer: We did steer clear of Samsung QVO series of SSD, out of concerns of longer term durability due to lower write cycles of QVO QLC technology.

Hello,

I have used both Samsung and Western Digital NVMe SSDs in my ThinkPads.  No differences noted.
