P50 Won't Boot after Recovery

2021-04-24, 13:50 PM

Attempting to repurpose my P50 which has been in use for several years, first I updated the BIOS to 1.63, downloaded the Recovery media and created a USB Win10 recovery USB drive.

I followed the recommended BIOS settings and restored defaults and rebooted the PC. This resulted in the device displaying the boot menu and when ether primary or USB recovery drive is selected the PC seems to try and boot and just returns to the drive selection menu.

Then I found info that suggested turning off secure boot and enable legacy boot with CMS which allowed me to boot the USB recovery drive and successfully recover the primary SSD, after completion and rebooting the PC has the same behavior, brings me to the boot drive selection menu and when a drive selected wont boot just returns to the drive selection menu.

I ran full diagnostic and passed all test successfully. See attached sys info for device details.

Not sure what to do next or if my BIOS is configured correctly.

Hello Babylon365,

Welcome to Lenovo Community forums

Would you have the USB Win10 installer created for UEFI GPT partition?
Try to reload the BIOS defaults with the USB unplugged and see if you boot up.
Reloading the defaults sets Boot mode to UEFI secured boot enabled and on Exit tab , OS optimized for Win 10 if you check back the BIOS to save and exit.

Hi Lorenzo,

I created a new Win10 installer with UEFI GPT partition and restored BIOS defaults, OS optimized is enabled too.

When I boot the same issue persists, the device presents the boot drive selection menu and when I select the USB or SSD the PC screen blanks for a sec and just returns to the boot drive selection menu.

Hello,

I have seen this occur on other computers when the drive was not wiped prior to performing the OS reload using the recovery media.

Have you tried wiping the internal drive(s), then using the recovery media to reinstall the operating system?

@goretsky Thanks for the reply

since I can not boot to a USB I also can not perform any disk operations, do you think if I pulled the drive and wiped in another PC this would work?

Hello,

Yes, you can certainly wipe the drive in another computer.

Re:P50 Won't Boot after Recovery

2021-06-16, 17:42 PM

Not sure if this helps, but I'm having a similar boot issue on my Thinkpad P52s.  Here's what I wrote on an Intel forum:

I've spent days trying to track down what crashed my laptop and this is what I've narrowed it down to.

I have reinstalled Windows 10 20H2 and turned off Windows Updates. I then loaded some updates from the Lenovo website for this Thinkpad P52s, but did NOT allow the critical update of the Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Driver version 17.5.1.1021 to be installed.  Then I created a Windows Restore Point.

Now I can CONSISTENTLY install that Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology Driver version 17.5.1.1021 and when I restart, Windows will NOT boot.  It starts the boot cycle, but then just displays a Boot Manager screen to select a drive to boot from and the SATA hard drive is not in the list.  From there I can try Repairing Windows, but it just fails. The only thing I can successfully do at that point is either restore from my Restore Point or reinstall Windows.

So, I could manage with this, except that if I turn on Windows Updates so that I can get Windows security updates, it will also automatically this RST drive too and crashes the system again.

The first time the problem occurred was on June 8 when the laptop was still running Windows 10 2004 I think.  Everything had been running OK until that morning and I think when Windows pushed out Tuesday updates that morning and the laptop restarted, that's when I got the first boot manager screen and couldn't boot.  That day I tried restoring to a restore point, but it returned some kind of error that said a restore couldn't be done.  It looked to me at that point it was a Windows Update or hard drive crash or something, but since I could reinstall Windows and can function just fine until I apply updates (specifically that Intel RST update), then that's why I'm posting on Intel.

Any guidance or advice would be appreciated.

Hello Ginnys,

You can check out some steps here for disabling forced driver update:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-disable-automatic-driver-update-in-windows/6fd6ed0e-7cc8-4e0f-a2fb-e72af0571bfb

Security updates from Microsoft may offer stand alone version, but I suggest you reach out to them so that the corresponding versions will be given to you.
