P50 and ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock

2017-10-01, 13:14 PM

Is the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock compatible with P50?

Dock details page (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/cz/en/solutions/acc100356) only list P51s, but not P50. But P50 claims support for Thunderbold 3.

If yes,  can I connect Ethernet LAN over the dock? And what driver I need to install?

Hello,

The ThinkPad P50 uses either a 170 Watt or a 230 Watt adapter.  The Thunderbolt port actually makes use of USB Power Delivery, and that supplies a maximum of 100 Watts of power.

If you want a ThinkPad that charges over its Thunderbolt 3/USB Type-C connector, you should look at one of the models like the P51s or P40 Yoga, which use a 65 Watt power supply.

If you want a ThinkPad which uses Intel Xeon CPUs, has four SO-DIMM modules for up to 64GB of RAM, multiple drive bays, etc., you'll need to purchase a model from the P50/P51 or P70/P71 series, and those use 170 or 230 watts, respectively.

Lenovo does a lot of cool stuff with power supplies, battery energy density, cooling systems and so forth, but, unfortunately, this is limitation of the USB Power Delivery specification itself.  It's possible that the USB Implementers Forum will update the standard in the future, but that is a standard which has to be ratified by them; Lenovo just can't make a non-compatible device and still sell it as being Thunderbolt or USB compatible.

Re:P50 and ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock

Hi,

I've been trying the P1G2 with a Thunderbolt 3 Dock together with the 230W power supply and the 'slim Y tip cable' plus the dual thunderbolt + power cable.

Of course, that setup works fine with P1G2, but when I connected the P50 instead (using thunderbolt for monitor and USB devices pass trough) and the power tip to the 'Power' port of the P50.

I was expecting to use Thunderbolt 3 V2 dock with both my P1G2 and P50, but as said, monitors work fine but laptop reports as not charging at all.

Anything I might be missing?

Hello,

Have you tried using the dock with two power supplies, a 230 Watt and a 135 Watt or 65 Watt one?

Re:P50 and ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock

The Dock has the 230W power supply that comes with the P50 and a y-split cable with slim tip so that it splits the power between the dock itself and the laptop.

Then, to the laptop it goes the cable containing the thunderbolt and the split head for the power (same one I'm using with P1G2),

The only difference I saw, is that with P1G2 the dock station 'power button led' is green and with the P50 it's always orange, so looks like if the dock is in 'standby' instead of powering the laptop for 'whatever reason'

I would like to get rid of my flat dock station and use this one so that I could use either laptop and also, regain space in my table...
