P50 and WWAN option - upgrade/availability

2016-01-30, 16:20 PM

Just for clarity, may someone confirm :

  • Can the currently available P50 that has no option for WWAN be upgraded at a later date, i.e. it is WWAN ready and just needs a card, or that the current P50 will not support WWAN and cannot be upgraded.
  • Also, if upgradable there must already be a slot for the SIMM card, is one there?
  • It has been suggested that the WWAN option will become available in April, can someone confirm this?

Many thanks

Rob

First suggestions were indeed, that the P50 (and P70) will have no built-in antennas for WWAN and that models with antennas would be available at a later time.

However, when my P50 shipped in december it clearly had the necessary antennas, since the cables are just there by the slot. So whenever the WWAN-card will be available there should be no problem to upgrade the current models.

Hey Cubbi, that’s good news, I assume you also have a SIMM card slot somewhere? Battery compartment??

Yes, that is right. The SIM-slot is just under the battery.

I'm curious why Lenovo did not offer an option for providing an older card, an EM7345 for instance.

Am I right in thinking these older cards will fit a P50/P70 ?

EM7345 has a lot of firmware issues because it was a custom card made specifically for Lenovo based on Intel chipset. The EM7455 is regular card made for everyone based on Qualcomm chipset.

I second that -- any information on availability (as well as features, specs, supported bands, etc.) would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Lenovo,

Any posibility of an official/unofficial response for the availability of the EM7455 card and confirmation of it working in P50's that were shipped without?

According to post #26 on https://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/196112-P50-mit-WWAN-F%C3%A4higkeit/page2 it seems, that you can upgrade current P50/P70 with WWAN.

The guy from that post installed an Lenovo EM7455 (FRU 00JT542) with was taken out of X1 Carbon into a P70 and it worked.

So although many people said only P50/P70 shipping in april will be work, it now seems, that also the current models can be updated, fingers crossed. An official word about this from Lenovo would be appreciated.
