Re: P50 and WWAN option - upgrade/availability - Options!!

I'm 100% positive it will work as long as you have the antennas (or the ability to install antennas yourself).

The real question is A. Where that guy found the unicorn that is the EM7455 and B. Will it be available anytime this century?

It's been ~4+ months since the first P50's were sold, what is the holdup? I can't even find the part number 00JT542 or EM7455 at ingram or D&H.

The "guy" is a retailer in Germany. They took the module from the X1 Carbon they just received and put it into a P70. And it works. The EM7455 has already been type approved (FCC and CE) with the P50 and P70 in October. Also for post-install where antenna cables are present.

If it turns out that the EM7455 doesn't work for the current P50 and P70, it is basically fraud.

I'd like to know of the reasons for hold-up too. Maybe there were reliability issues in the beginning. Maybe some vendor are currently stocking up on the EM7455 that they need for a product refresh. We'll probably never know the true reason. I'm in the electronics hardware industry myself, and if you use ICs that are either new or with few/no compatible replacements, then you can really feel when another more important customer suddenly buys a very large quantity.

My replacement parts shop (handled by IBM) has 00JT542 in stock. But price says "To be disclosed by IBM". So $20, $200 or $2000. I'll contact them on Monday. :)

But I won't get my hopes up, the 4K Sharp display costs about $1000 as a replacement part...

Perhaps, but you can also get a few other screens that looks like they are highly likely to be compatible. (and on paper better screens)

Such as the: LQ156D1JX01 - same mounting, cable position, etc. Runs ~$250-300, almost makes me think some people may be better off opting without the 4k screen and buying the cable/screen separate. 330 vs 300 brightness on paper.
(if they are that nitpicky, I think the 4k screen is perfect for me, but I know it doesn't meet some peoples requirements).

Personally I wouldn't be so frustrated/upset about the lack of availability of the 4G chip if Lenovo didn't blacklist every other chip on the planet. If they won't have it available the least they could do is allow us to use a 4G chip from an older generation.

Looks like Aliexpress has a few people with them listed, I see near the bottom someone in the states ordered one a few days ago - hopefully he leaves feedback if its legit or not:

Thanks.  So perhaps these devices are now in production pipeline at Sierra.

Another issue will be to determine if something has been added to the OEM design to identify and enable only authentic Lenovo WWAN parts, or if generic Sierra cards will work in P series machines.

So, I contacted IBM today regarding the 00JT542 (didn't have time to do this earlier) - very helpful and kind people to talk to. About $200 before taxes. Not too bad. The EM7355 they actually charge a little bit more for.

But before I pull the trigger I want to be sure that it actually works in the P50. Lenovo?

I doubt it is compatible - it's not on the parts list and I'd be surprised knowing lenovo in the last few years if its not blacklisted in the bios.

The EM7355 is definitely not compatible - someone else verified that it isn't, although on a P70. It was just to compare prices between generations. The EM7455 is compatible, at least as long as it is Lenovo branded and 00JT542 - this part number is listed in the FRU/BOM list for the P50.

Received FRU 00JT542 today from the IBM-parts site. Installation was easy and put in an old T-Mobile Sim card which I had laying around from a data-only Ipad account. Then, installed the updated drivers for the Sierra Wireless on the Lenovo Support page and called T-Mobile to re-activate the Sim card. Works very well. I'm not in an overly strong area for T-Mobile reception but still getting 20down/10up. Very happy about this :)

The Sierra EM7455 is the only supported by Lenovo yet. For other ThinkPad 2016 models there is also Huawei ME906S option. The difference might be important for european customers.

The EM7455 supports 3G, LTE and fastest LTE-A access technologies but no longer supports 2G data. There are some countries with underdeveloped mobile networks like over here where 2G (GPRS/EDGE) is still the only available coverage in some areas. That's why the ME906S is offered (except P models yet but it might be supported in future BIOS updates, it is matter of blacklisting only) because it supports 2G, 3G and LTE (no LTE-A).
