P50 for parts

2020-09-09, 18:53 PM

Talked to Lenovo and they reckon that the motherboard on my laptop has died. Won't confirm it until I pay to send it in and wouldn't even provide a rough cost unless i coughed up £50.

To that end its scrap. if anyone wants some parts from it make me an offer. I've stripped out my HDD and memory but otherwise its complete. Even has the cradle for SSD and for a second slimline SATA HDD.

Its in the UK.

Wont power on with the button. Plug in the power cord you get a random number of fan puffs accompanied with flashes of the power button and keyboard LEDs.

I managed to get it working the other day (first failure like this) and it seemed fine. Ran MEMTEST on it and it crapped out. been completely dead since with the fan chuffing issues. Have been having some peculiar random memory related BSOD failures but every test ran passed. Suspect that there is/was something underlying.

Rang Lenovo and they suspect its the motherboard. As its a work laptop, out of warranty, and proving unreliable its junk. Even if i got it booted again I wouldn't trust it so ordered a replacement (HP!)

I have removed the SSD, the 2nd HDD and the memory modules.

If you were in U.S. I would offer to buy it but shipping from UK to US would probably be too much.  It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but it might be something simple like a short in the power switch.  It might be the motherboard, but that is what people always say when they have no idea.  It really means "I don't know and it might be expensive so you should buy a new one".

Fair do's. With the memory issues(?) over the past few months I strongly suspect the motherboard. Its the second one in this machine. First was replaced under warranty for crapping out every USB port.

Might pull it to bits for a nose, just to see but I'm not using it again.
