P51 Black Screen

2020-05-19, 0:11 AM

My P51 isn't that old and I'm having black screen issues.

Here is what happened:

  • initially I had rainbow colored vertical lines in the left side of my built in screen
  • then it totally went blank
  • but the external monitor still works when using HDMI

Here is what I tried:

  • removed power and battery
  • held power button down for as long as 2 minutes
  • booted back up
  • didn't work
  • bought a new screen and replaced
  • didn't work

What else could it be? Everything else works fine, graphics are smooth on external monitor even using both my built-in  graphics and the 2nd M2200 card.

Thanks,

Marc

To clarify...only the built-in LCD panel does not work.

The external monitor works fine.

Also - when I go to my display settings to configure dual monitors, the machine only recognizes the external monitor.

All other Lenovo Vantage diagnostics - quick scan and full scan are coming back successful.

Update

I replaced the LCD cable and replaced the screen. The only improvement is now that I can shine a light on the screen and I can see a dim image. Now what? Any tips on going about an inverter replacement?

There is no inverter on any screen with LED backlight.  (anything newer than about 2011) If you can now see a faint image, your old screen was probably dead and when you replaced it, you blew a fuse on your motherboard.  That can happen if something is still connected or from static electricity.  You need to drain capacitors and wear a ground strap when working on screen connectors.  Most repair places cannot replace motherboard fuses. You need a fairly good rework station and be able to figure out where the fuse is.  No schematics are available.

Hi,

I have a similar problem with my P51  my screen displays colorful vertical lines. It worked fine up until this morning.

For about 20 minutes it displayed the screen with a lot of flickering but now it’s only lines.

Please help,
Ana
