Betreff: P51 - Heavy Throttling on Battery

2017-06-06, 4:12 AM
Adjusting power settings doesn't seem to have any effect. I've also just updated the bios as there was a new release today, same behavior.

Can someone from Lenovo look into this?

I agree. Someone from Lenovo should look into this. I do understand that such throttling maybe not a bug, but by design, but the user should have to choice to have the max. performance available on battery.

Try this then: Get ThrottleStop and run it. It has a button called Limit Reasons that should indicate exactly the message the CPU receives that causes it to throttle.

Tried it and just as I thought, its TDP throttling. If I disable the option "BD PROCHOT", it can run on almost full power in battery mode. With it active, the CPU throttles heavily down to 0.8 GHz (only running on battery).

In that case it's probably not the GPU being active throttling it. (In my W520, unchecking BD PROCHOT couldn't stop CPU throttling when Quadro was active.)

Same issue here. How is this thing a mobile workstation if I can't use the Nvidia GPU while on battery??? Ridiculous. Between this and my shiny new 4K display flickering (and having to wait 5+ business days for "Premium Support" to replace it...still waiting) I am not very happy with this new laptop at all.

Same here. P50 didn't seem to have this issue and the new model is supposed to be an improvement. I don't want to send my laptop back but this is unacceptable. Any guess how long until Lenovo rolls out a fix?

If you launch Lenovo's Power Manager, and you adjust the slider (when on battery) to the High Performance side, does that help?

My P50 has two different settings on that slider--one for when I'm on AC, and one for when I'm on battery. I ended up changing the position of both to fit my usage.

Lenovo Power Manager is not available on Windows 10 and the P51 is not compatible with Windows 7.

The replacement app (Lenovo Settings) has a few power related settings, but they are all set to max. performance for me and the throttling still happens.
