Re: P51 - Heavy Throttling on Battery

My P71 with a P5000 does not shut the P5000 off when on battery.

P71 Xeon E3-1535M v6, 64GB RAM, NVIDIA P5000 GPU, 1TB Samsung SM961 PCIe-NVMe SSD x 2, Seagate Firecuda 2TB SSHD x2, EM7455 WWAN

Re: P51 - Heavy Throttling on Battery

This throttling seems to be somehow related to the Nvidia card.  I am running linux on my p51.  I use bumblebee to control the gpus, and normally have the nvidia gpu powered down.  I can reliably trigger the throttling by running mpv without hardware accelleration.  That gets the CPU stuck at 800MHz.  I can get it unstuck by toggling the nvidia card on and then off again.  Note that it remains stuck until the nvidia card is powered off.  I don't have to actually use the nvidia card, it is sufficient to write "ON" to /proc/acpi/bbswitch and then "OFF"

I can confirm that this seems to be connected with the Nvidia GPU somehow. When I use my machine on battery its sometimes fine, but if I connect an external display, throttling very often (not always) occurs. Its a strange and likely difficult to solve issue, because its such an inconsistent behaviour. Still, it would be great if someone from Lenovo could look into this.

I am so glad i found this. We have multiple P51 here, and it seems that all are affected. It is outrageous that nobody from Lenovo have bothered to drop a message here, since this is a huge problem! It is almost 2 months since this thread were created and no progress..? just wow...

I sent a private message to at least one person here, and tried contacting a few others but they didn't seem to concerned.  I'm happy that I made the decision to return it instead of waiting for a solution.

Well, I must say that this issue in effect immobilize the computer, since it is more or less useless without its power cable. I will take it for granted that Lenovo get this sorted out. My soon-to-die iPad 2. gen is more efficient to use on the road than the P51.

Re: P51 - Heavy Throttling on Battery

As an update, I have tried booting into Linux Mint 18.2 as well and experience the same behavior, which seems to rule out the possiblilty of this being a Windows related issue. I have also tried to make Lenovo aware of this on social media, so hopefully someone will chime in soon to let us know at the very least that they are taking these reports seriously and looking into the problem. This seems to be a recurring issue with Lenovo products based on the extensive research that I have done.

Very, very frustrating to have to stay plugged in to have a useable $3K+ laptop.

It's been almost 2 months and no one from Lenovo has even bothered to say a few words despite this being one of the most active threads.

I checked my P51 and I could reproduce strange (unexpectedly slow) behavior using Prime95 in benchmark mode.  I'm going to ask a BIOS person for their comment.
