P51 overheat and shutdown

2021-03-08, 17:06 PM

Hi, when I use a benchmark program or meshroom the laptop shuts down after reaching 100°C, is this normal? I can only kind of make it calculate in energy save mode and without AC. Cheers

CPU Intel 7820HQ

GPU Nvidia M2200

Re:P51 overheat and shutdown

Thanks for your help, I got it to a lenovo repair shop and they first could not figure out the problem without removing the heatpipe.

On second try they removed the heatpipe just like I did before and found out that some heat conductive pads were missing.

150$ later the CPU gets worse temperatures then before but the GPU got better.

Maybe Ill take it apart one more time to repaste with artic mx again.

Thats the problem when buying used laptops, always full benchmark on arrival :p

On a site note : when I followed the repair manual, its easily possible to scratch the screen (lenovo store did the same mistake). If the keyboard cover is removed and you turn it on the back side to remove the scews of the display hinge. The exposed cage touches the screen which is a design flaw of the manual I guess, but I think I can polish it out.

Next time I will put a towel between for safety.

cheers

applied new mx5 arctic today and it still. reaches 100degrees, but did not shut down yet, i feel like the gpu is not throttleling which is causing the problem, what a waste of 4hours taking this laptop apart :(

btw the old original conductor was silver and spilled and dried next to the chip, nice quality management

Well the original thermal compund looks nowhere like the picture shared. It seems the previous owner must have botched it.

anyway, if new paste was not helping I would try to see if the fan assembly is bent or fails to make proper contact?

I successfully repasted my P50 and P51 with great effect. The P51 can now turbo forever without breaking a sweat or hit any current draw limitation.

thanks for the advice, the cpu is fine, only the gpu overheats / failsafe shutdown at 101°C, the fans looked ok and no flex and or noises

this could have been a bitcoin machine for all I know, or dont :p

here are some more pictures from repaste

https://ibb.co/3CFsYbW
https://ibb.co/4pfgDN9
https://ibb.co/9hJPrp1
https://ibb.co/SwgWcbM
https://ibb.co/hLr6qQB

CPU clock at 100% is ~ 3,5GHz - 3,6GHz ~72°C max

GPU

keeps overheating

1pixel = 1 second

idle

medium stress

full stress , I guess CUDA 100% stopped process at 100°C manually to prevent shutdown

The GPU really looked like a mess, CPU was pretty clean. Anyway what software do you use to push the GPU?

There should be two fans, I assume both of them are running? I still feel there might be a connectivity issue between cooler and GPU and would try to bend it straight.

I ran furmark on two P51 w M2200 for a little time.

Can you run furmark or do you have another torture test?

P51 in a closed drawer no repaste:

Basically CPU thermal throttle and limit turbo after a couple of minutes. GPU does not reach over 80 degs.

P51 with repaste on a dock:

Basically CPU can max turbo indefinitely and do not hit any thermal or power limits, GPU does not rise above 80 degs running for long time.
