Re: P51s Freezing a lot

2017-12-01, 8:25 AM

Thank you all for responding. I'll make sure to check for updates before I start installing & customizing mine.

I wonder if my unit will already have these updates done. I'm assuming the system will tell me if it needs any.

Thanks again!

Re: P51s Freezing a lot

Glad to hear the sun is shining on you and your P51...  My motherboard, which includes P/S and video card, was replaced but no joy here.  I have had several additional bug checks since and seem to point to the Nvidia drivers, both audio and video.  Trying to figure out how to run off a generic Microsoft video driver for a while to see if that makes a difference but was able to disable the High Def. audio driver.

I've been all through the Power settings maze, default, High Perf, custom, etc. to no avail.

@haemeulrich

What I am curious about are the " (and with several firmware updates from Lenovo in the last weeks) ".  Which updates did you install?

Thanks - Roscoe

Hi @Roscoe_Beretta First I have to say that I'm not yet the Windows Guru. I switchted a year ago after 25 years Apple only. What I do: I have installed the App "Lenovo Companion" out of the Windows Store. I made every update there, also firmware upgrades. Since then my think is running like a charme. Before I had the same problems as you. Even changed the motherboard.

@haemeulrich

Thanks for the info.  I've thought about installing every update but was hesitant because I didn't want to introduce a lot of new variables.  Sounds good in theory but not paying much in the way of dividends.  So pondering you method.

Apple...I had one of the first 2e.  Showing my age...  Liked it and about the only problems I remember was the barely faster than a turtle, cassette tape drive.  Those were the days.  Better late than never to get back on the right side of the tracks with a PC. :)  I never understood the draw to Apple.  To me, half the "fun" is having every option imaginable available wrt what is inside your machine.  It makes the metal more personal to me.  I've been a geek forever and what I do professionaly.  Yep, I'm one of those...  Thanks again.

PS  I used the "Lenovo Companion" a lot.  It was just updated to "Lenovo Vantage".  Nice face lift.

Re: P51s Freezing a lot

2018-01-21, 1:32 AM

Hello,

I might have potentially figured out how to get around this problem.

STORY (if you care):

I purchased a Lenovo P51S back in May and have run into the same problem that is being described here, around last week (Jan 2018), namely random freezing during normal day to day working of the laptop. Normally I run Ubuntu dual booted with Windows 10 (needed for firmware updates).

So initially, my Ubuntu started randomly crashing/freezing. In the beginning, this was rare, but over three more days, this started to happen too often, such that I wasn’t able to use my laptop for any work. I then decided to backup all my data (mounted Ubuntu live USB and backed up hard disk) and to try to install other operating systems, to narrow down the cause (if its OS related).

I installed FreeBSD and got continuous CPU crashes when I executed and portsnap fetch/extract commands. I installed Ubuntu again and still got crashes. Finally I installed Windows 10 again, but still got crashes (frowny Windows 10 face).

All this time, I came to the realization that the crashes were happening when the power adapter was plugged in. The laptop behaved fine with any OS if it was working on battery power only. I thought my USB-C power adapter was causing this problem, and I purchased a Lenovo slim tip power adapter, but the problem continued.  I then realized (hints from this thread) that this might entirely be power related.

POTENTIAL SOLUTION:

Turn off advanced power options in the P51s including Intel SpeedStepping technology.

    1. Go to BIOS settings menu (Reboot -> Press Enter -> Press F1)

    2. Under Config Select Power and set settings as follows:

        Intel (R) SpeedStep technology [Disabled]

            Mode for AC            [Maximum Perfor]

            Mode for Battery     [Maximum Perfor]

        Adaptive Thermal Management

            Scheme for AC        [Maximize Perfor]

            Scheme for Battery [Maximize Perfor]

        CPU Power Management [Disabled]

Power On with AC Attach [Disabled]

(Leave other power settings as they are)…

Hope this helps others, but if I notice the crashes again, I will update this thread.

Thanks.

Same here.

Short freeze (of a few seconds) happen, usually as it seems after resuming from sleep?

New p51 Xeon, 32GB RAM, 512MB M.2 + 1T SSD.

hi. I think you have the P51, this guy was asking about the P51s.
yet, it comes to mind to try to rollback the Intel Graphics driver; it is often the cause of freezes related to sleep.
so you can try Windws+X+M
locate the intel graphics, right click, properties and in the driver tab, select rollback.

Hi,

Thanks, I will try the rollback.

And yes, I have the P51 and not P51s. I imagine I confused the s with the plural s...

I purchased my P51s last Oct and had exactly same problem. After hours of researching and debug, I found that issue was Intel Rapid Storage driver. Just uninstall that driver, the freeze problem ran away immediately. Hope it could help.

I have a P51s. I was having both this problem and another problem with poor performance when plugged in but not in the dock. I tried everything mentioned here, no dice. I watched the throttling using Intel XTU, and couldn't seem to do anything about it, with the result that off the dock the laptop was either very slow or unusable. What worked for me was: Go to Power Manager, select the "Global Power Settings" tab , and uncheck "Automatically enable Cool Mode when Power Manager detects that your device is being held." This fixed both the performance problems off the dock and stuttering on battery. I hope this helps some other poor soul struggling with this frustrating issue!
