Re: P51s external monitor random shut off

2018-11-13, 23:23 PM

Bummer! I think there is more than one issue with the Lenovo products. I'm convinced my issue is a bad HMDI port on the laptop but I don't want to replace the entire system board. The part # for my docking station is: 40A20090US. Not sure if the US vs EU makes any difference? I'm also thinking that Lenovo is asleep at the wheel when it comes to the quality control process. China is notorious for inconsistent quality.

I'm in the process of narrowing down choices for a 2 in 1 laptiop for my wife. I really like the Lenovo Yoga 730 (i5, 8GB RAM, 256 SSD) but I'm having a hard time spending one more dollar with Lenovo. Funny, the Yoga 730 doesn't have a HDMI port.

It also seems to me that there is no difference between the US and EU versions

As for Lenovo Yoga 730 (i5, 8 GB RAM, 256 SSD) is a great and covered in Poland premium care service, meaning repair warranty in 5 days or refund and repaired equipment! Awesome and as you have seen, there is no HDMI :smileylol:

I installed new drivers: Intel Management Engine 11.8 Firmware
(11.8.59.3560), Intel Serial IO Driver (30.100.1823.1) and
Intel Graphics Driver (24.20.100.6344). I do not expect miracles, but maybe ... we'll see.

I didn't have a USB-C hub so I plugged in my Yubikey 4C which is a USB-C authenticator fob (got it free at an RSA conference!) and it worked! I have my LG monitor plugged into the Lenovo HDMI port and since I inserted the USB-C authenticator fob, the blinking has stopped. If it starts up again, I will let you know.

My P51S has had the same issue from day one.  They have replaced the MOBO and HDD, neither worked.  They then had me restore  back to factory and try each driver up to the most current.  Even tried to change what video card controls what device but the issue is still there. Any external screen attached to the HDMI port - either with a straight HDMI cable or any HDMI to VGA, DVI adapters - has the same blinking on and off at random times.  This is extrememly annoying!!  The last time I called they wanted me to take my work laptop to a certified Lenovo center to have them look at it.  I called them and they wanted the laptop for at least 3-4 days.  That is not going to happen!

Yeah my solution was to sell this unit on ebay and to buy a newer model. I came to the conclusion that I was done with this lemon model. I love Lenovo and I even replaced it with one, but there is some defect with this unit they're not willing to admit. Perhaps it's even limited to a revision of this model, but I just don't have time for this personally. So I had to upgrade EARLY and take a loss of cash to do so.

Wow - this has become laughable. Lenovo KNOWS there's an issue. They are one of the following: 1) Naive or 2) Lacking even a modicum of integrity or 3) Very interested in the customer experience but is convinced the Russians hacked this forum with fake posts or 4) Focused soley on the bottom line and willing to tell their technicians and customer service agents to simply lie to the customer and claim they are not aware of any issues. Number 4 kind of resembles number 2. Number 4 just seems a bit more devious. Which one do you think it is? Wait, here's one last option, 5) They are all smoking crack.

Same issue here. Shame on Lenovo that did not address on it.

One thing I've found in working with Lenovo on issues like this through their Premier Support for businesses is that it seems these forums aren't monitored very well. I brought a case to theor attention about brand-new P52 laptops being bricked when modifying the Discrete Graphics option in the BIOS, sent them several links where folks here have reported it, and they seemed completely surprised that the issue was documented on their own site.

TL;DR
Contact them directly, by phone or support portal to get a Case opened and have your issue taken seriously.

Unfortunately, talking to them directly doesn't really help if you read several of the other posts including posts from those that did talk directly to Lenovo only to get the run-around. There solution to me was to send in my laptop to have the system / motherboard replaced. It would have taken up to 3 weeks (or possibly longer) which is not an acceptable solution. Plus, they couldn't guarantee that the replacement would be from a 'healthy' lot. They did seem to be convinced that the problem is a bad HDMI port which requires a full system board replacement (in their words).

I agree. In my opinion, you can not miss the problem, which has a hundred posts and over five thousand views, no way.
