Re: P51s external monitor random shut off

The worst thing is - I could not even rollback the driver to the previous version. The rollback button is grayed out.

You should be able to manually download the said version and run the executable. That should give it to you.

Keep an eye if you use Lenovo Vantage as it may try to bring you to the latest almost immediately. So just don't chose to update the graphics adapter driver from Vantage

Thanks crendon for the suggestion.

The video controller audio devices do not show up under the "Sound, video, and game controllers" as in your setup. When I bring up Device Manager, the HDMI monitor shows up under "Audio inputs and outputs." I tried disabling it, but it didn't seem to make a difference, plus it shows up each time the HDMI monitor is plugged back in. I will experiment more and do some research when I have a spare moment. Thanks.

Re: P51s external monitor random shut off

This is very frustrating that Lenovo doesn't give any attention to this.

I've been having this problem since I got my P51s (about 3-4 months ago). I have never installed any drivers outside from Lenovo's website neither even attempted to. Here's my setup

Case 1: Using USB-C docking stating with two monitors, one plugged via Display port then converted to Analong CRT cable, and the other monitor plugged directly to the Analog CRT port in the docking station.

Result 1: The monitor connected via to the display port would randomly go crazy and just keep restarting. By crazy I mean really crazy, switching off/on every 2-3 seconds and non-stop.

Result 2: When I switch the lights on/off in the room I'm sitting in and even sometimes the rooms around me, the monitor connected to the display port would switch off/on once (if it is not in crazy mode already).

Result 3: The monitor connected to the CRT port works perfectly fine, although there's some very minor flickering in the display that could seem related to refresh rate, but it is very much bearable.

Case 2: Connecting HDMI monitor directly to the laptop

Result 1: Exacltly the same as Case 1 -> Result 1.

I'm a software develop and my entire life is on the laptop. My previous Lenovo Flex 3 had some issues also with the display adapter randomly restarting. As if it was doing a driver update. I trusted Lenovo again and thought maybe my Flex 3 had some malfunction and Lenovo of course wouldn't make another mistake. But it seems they did, and they don't even CARE to post a reply saying "we'll look into this"!

I wish we can just tag @Lenovo or something!

Did any of these recent updates help? I haven't had a chance to test.

Nope, still the same issue. Although it might seem to be happening less than often but still happening. Also the screen flickers from time to time (without actually powering off and on), very irritating flickering as if it is an old TV trying to get signal.

I just got my handme down work laptop.. SAME issue as all reported.. I've connected an external HDMI monitor via the HDMI port.. What seems to solve the issue for me is, LEAVING THE LAPTOP LID OPEN.. I don't use a dock, and it's good to know buying a dock won't solve this issue.. Hope this is resolved soon, my passed 4 years of work were HP, and now I don't like this most recent Lenovo experience...

Re: P51s external monitor random shut off

Ok I might have found some workaround. Not sure which is the one that's working but this is definitely working for at least 1 hour now.

Non effective change: I went to device manager and disabled all unused devices. For example HDMI Audio, SMS/MMS module (no sim card in the laptop anyway), etc... These changes were not effective at all.

Effective change: I opened the Intel Graphics Settings and changed the refresh rate of the external monitor to 50p. The monitor instantly stopped flickering. It was going crazy with switching off & on every 10 seconds. Now it has been stable for at least an hour.

Now I know that not all monitors will support this refresh rate but you can add custom resolutions & refresh rates manually. I hope this helps anyone.

PS: the monitor is connected directly using HDMI cable. Did not try docking station yet. Don't have the station now, will try in about 3 weeks and will reply here.

Edit: Forgot to add that I also updated the monitor drivers from the device manager through regular windows updates.
