Re: P51s external monitor random shut off

A new BIOS appreared. You know something is off if they're updating the BIOS every other week.
Does this update fix anything?

1.35? Nah, still same issues on my 20HB. I've used a mechanical dock and thunderbolt dock, both do it.

Re: P51s external monitor random shut off

I solved this.

This is an FYI in case anyone stubles across this thread in the future. This bug is annoying AF. The external monitor would flicker randomly making work impossible.

I solved it easily...by reducing the frame rate on my primary display. It was 60hz...I reduced it to 48hz. Now the problem is gone.

  1. Make sure your desktop is set to 1080p or below.
  2. Right click on desktop, select display settings.
  3. Click on advanced display settings.
  4. Click on the link at the bottom of the stats for your primary (not external) display.
  5. Now minimize that window...you should see a small window "multi-monitor display properties".
  6. Just select the "Monitor" tab and change the refresh rate to 48hz and click apply.

This might work with display properties on the external monitor as well...on my Yoga Pro 2 it told me I did not have permission to change that. But changing my primary display refresh rate worked anyway. In my scenario, both displays were 1080p...if you are using a higher resolution on either, this might not work (higher resolutions require more bandwidth). So try reducing resolution to 1080p or below.

I assume it is because of the limited memory for the frame buffer. There is a finite amount of bandwidth it can support. The card can't keep up on the external display, so it is dropping frames to keep up.

This is a workaround, not a solution.

I'm aware you're not representing Lenovo in this case, but I absolutely would not accept this as an acceptable response to the problem.

Glad you found a workaround (not a solution). It's too bad that Lenovo is intentionally choosing to ignore this issue. My workaround is to run from the HDMI output on the external monitor and into the USB-C port on the laptop. It's working. Also, in my other office, I use a docking station with 2 external monitors. I've never had the issue with the docking station. I believe the problem is the HDMI input (part of the system board).

I was going to send in my laptop to have the board replaced while still under warranty. It seemed to be too much of a hassle with no guarantee that the 'new' board would be any different. Glad you can at least use an external monitor again without the flicker issue.

Oh I agree. But Lenovo is never going to fix this. I think they have moved on.

The Yoga 2 doesn't have a USB-C port, or I would have tried that as well. In my case I am using the Mini-HDMI port (with an adapter to full size HDMI). It's messy, but it works.

You write that you use a docking station with 2 external monitors in the office. Please write what docking station you are using and how it is connected.

I have the ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock. Love it. Easy when I switch offices. Snaps in easily and has plenty of ports / plug-ins.

I also have a ThinkPad Ultra Dock 90W 40A20090EU and I'm happy with the foncality, but the external monitor flickers randomly making the work irritating. :smileyfrustrated:
