P52 Bricked

2020-03-01, 13:45 PM

Hi all,

i just bought a p52 few weeks ago, after leaving it on overnight, last morning i woke up and it don't power on no more, the led next to the power plug on the back don't light no more, i did undervolt the cpu minus -0.165volt to avoid power throttling does this void the warranty?

been trying various things to get it back on with no luck, disconnect cmos battery, tried the power button 30 sec press no luck neither, any clues?

my laptop is entitled to premier support / on site so i m about to request a support ticket on monday? my device is still under warranty till 2022 so i dont want to open it to mess around with the parts?

I made a firmware + bios upgrade on 27th of February (I stood by the whole time; it upgraded power management drivers, nvme drivers, thermal solution drivers, bios) and after the upgrade the laptop first complained that it cannot read from the hard drive, then it somehow recovered, and later refused to charge. It does (very slowly) charge when I turn it off, but it complains that I don't have the original charger when I have it switched on and immediately stops charging.

I tried downgrading or upgrading BIOS again to see if that would help, but the laptop won't let me do it because it wants power cable connected (and it thinks it's not connected).

Local service support said that replacing the motherboard on an otherwise functional laptop might be the only solution, but that sounds strange.

After using my laptop for 14 months, I got one lesson,

1. Never install lenovo BIOS/Firmware that's younger than one month.
2. Before you update anything, do research carefully and install them if and only if they are mandatory and you are 100% sure your machine gonna die without them.

After figuring out which service to pick, they in fact replaced the motherboard on the P52 in one working day and now it charges again. (At some service locations it would take more than a week.)

There are still some transient issues with the hard drive (NVMe error) and external monitor, but let's leave those for later.
