P52 Thunderbolt ports refresh rate, 2 external 4k monitors

2019-02-15, 22:55 PM

On the P52 specs, it says that it can drive 4 independent displays, and for the Thunderbolt ports, the max resolution is 5120X2880@30Hz. But what is the max resolution at 60Hz? Can I have the 4k laptop screen, plus two 4k external monitors individually connected to the two Thunderbolt ports, all running at 4k and 60Hz?

(when I say 4k, i mean 3840x2160)

Link to spec:

https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20P52/ThinkPad_P52_Platform_Specifications.pdf

For reference, here are the specs for the other video ports:

3840X2160@60Hz (DisplayPort via Mini DisplayPort cable)

4096x2160@60Hz (HDMI)

Note, I prefer to avoid the HDMI port if possible, due to issues from a P50 I'm currently using, no idea if they have been fixed or not in the P52.

Hello,

A 3840×2180 UHD resolution at 60Hz with 8-bit color depth and 4:4:4 Chroma sampling uses 17.82Gbps, according to this data rate calculator.  The Thunderbolt 3 interface is 40Gbps.  So, in theory, you could be able to get two 4K displays at 60Hz attached.  However, I don't recall off the top of my head anyone who has done this, so you may have to experiment to see if/how well it actually works.

Regards,

In such case, how is it possible to get (4) monitors running through a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock, which is connected with P52 with a single thunderbolt connection?

Hi goretsky,

Thanks for the reply. I agree that it should work in theory. I also checked the Quadro P2000 graphics card spec, and it says 4 monitors at 4k 120hz, or at 5k 60hz, so no limitation there. So why would Lenovo only spec 5k 30hz (especially when they spec 4k 60hz on the other ports)? This concerns me that there may be some sort of limitation in the laptop architecture to the thunderbolt ports? 4k 60hz is a higher bandwidth than 5k 30hz. Or do they mean they can do 5k 30hz in addition to 4k 60hz? Hopefully somebody has done this and can confirm, I can't be the only one wanting to do it.

Hi dm111, Did you ever find out if this works? I also have the same question with a P52 and the 4k laptop screen, but with the P3200. I'd like to run dual 4k monitors off the thunderbolt ports too.

Yes. And that does not depend on nVidia card kind either.
