P52 with 2666 RAM??

2019-08-24, 19:10 PM

Good morning,

I have a question re to the fastest RAM that a P52 Xeon can support.

- Lenovo's website pairs Xeon E-2176M processor with 2400 GHz of RAM

- Intel's website says that Xeon E-2176M supports 2666 GHz of RAM

So which is right?

I read other posts about the new BIOS 1.28 unlocking 2666 GHz for P52 users, so it would appear it is possible to run 2666 GHz on this laptop.

Does anyone know if the 2400 RAM that comes from Lenovo can be unlocked to 2666 via a BIOS update? Or I need to unstall 2666 GHz RAM sticks to make this happen?

Soooo confusing and I really hope Lenovo can clarify this for me

(I placed an order for a new P52 last night and hope to clarify this asao to be able to change the RAM if necessary)

Thank you!!

Hi lenny5,

I suggest you read this ThinkPad_P52_Platform_Specifications.pdf from https://psref.lenovo.com/Product/ThinkPad/ThinkPad_P52.

It is clearly written in the Chipset/Memory section "* Installed DIMMs are actually 2666MHz but run at 2400MHz due to Intel limitation".

So, I would expect your P52 memory to run at 2666MHz after you flash BIOS 1.28 and load Optimized defaults (F9).

Also will upgrading RAM from 2400 to 2666 (to use the 1.28 BIOS update) void my warranty?

Generally any time you open the laptop up you risk that being used as an excuse to voide the warrrany, but if you are careful and follow the steps in the Hardware Maintenance Manual to the letter, you can do so successfully.

You might also want to first use a tool such as HWiNFO (free) to check to see if you already have 2666MHz RAM, because the partlist for that model only shows 2666MHz, so your system may just be clocking down to 2400MHz due to the older BIOS.      HWiNFO will show you the Manufacturer/Model number of the installed RAM, which you can then use to search and determine what speed you current RAM is.

If you indeed do have 2400MHz, and you are planning on increasing the total amount of RAM, I would definitely buy 2666MHz, but if you are not increasing the amount I would not waste the time, because I doubt you would notice enough difference between 2400MHz and 2666MHz RAM.

The 1.28 BIOS update does state the following in the readme

CHANGES IN THIS RELEASE
  Version 1.28

[Important updates]
None

[New functions or enhancements]
- Support Memory Clock spped to 2667MHz.

Cheers,

Re: P52 with 2666 RAM??

I own a P52 with a Xeon (E-2176M) processor (built in 9/2018) and I can confirm that the factory installed DDR4 RAM chips are  2666 MHz that are throttled back to operate at 2400 MHz.  You can eaily prove this to yourself on your machine.  Recently, I updated the BIOS to N2CET46W (1.29) and found the RAM speed throttle was removed.  I needed to enable and save the BIOS (F9 key), then shutdown, and remove the battery for a few minutes.  After restart, the RAM current (operating) speed equals the maximum speed of 2666MHz. No more 2400MHz.

Re: P52 with 2666 RAM??

I have an identical P52 machine. After the latest BIOS update, I have the following specs:

Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) E-2176M CPU @ 2.70GHz, 2712 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)

BIOS Version/Date LENOVO N2CET46W (1.29 ), 2019-08-27

Not sure how or why but 2666 is now 2712

Go figure...

In that description, 2712MHz is the current CPU speed, not the memory speed.
