Re: P52s -After Newest Power Mgmt Driver, Speakers Make Popping Noise When Connected to Thunderbolt

I have the X1E and the Lenovo TB3 Workstation Dock, and ran into this audio pop issue before finding this thread.

I updated the power manager driver https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-extreme/20mf/20mf000dus/r90rhxwh/downloads to version 1.67.14.07 (I had 1.67.14.5), and it seems to have fixed the pop. Great!

(Oddly, Lenovo Vantage didn't list it as an available update, so I had to figure out mine was outdated and install it manually.)

Edit: I take it back. The issue is not fixed now that I let the computer sit for a bit and came back to it. The pops are back even with 1.67.14.7. Odd because they were gone after the PM update and a reboot.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your feedback.

Lenovo has published PM driver 1.67.14.7 as critical update in Lenovo Vantage in this Dec.

We checked by ourselves that it effectives on both P52s and X1E.

Sincerely yours.

Hi,

Are you talking about 1.67.14.07 from October 2018? https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-extreme/downloads.

If so, as mentioned above, the issue comes back and is not fixed. Otherwise, what update are you talking about from December?

I think he's a little behind the 8-ball.  It's still not fixed.

Dear Customer,

Sorry for the trouble to you.

Could you share more detailed information about the issue you met with 1.67.14.7 ?  We will confirm again in our lab.

1.What kind of operation you have done to see it ? Are you playing online video or something when you hear the pops  ?

2.in your below note, do you mean once reboot the system , the issue can't duplicate any more ?

"....The pops are back even with 1.67.14.7. Odd because they were gone after the PM update and a reboot."

Sincerely yours.

The pops seemed to be gone, but after using the X1E longer, they came back.

It's any sound really - online video is a good test (like YouTube). Play a video, you'll hear a pop. Pause it. After a while, you'll hear another pop when the sound device essentially goes to sleep from what I can tell. After that, playing something again will cause the pop again.

It happens anywhere there are videos, even if the videos are muted or there is no audio playing, it's activating some sort of audio portion within the driver and it's popping every time a video either starts or stops.  Good example websites as mentioned, youtube, and wimp.com is a good one because they do video ads on the side which causes it.

Dear Customer,

Thanks for your information.

We have duplicated similar "popping noise" by letting the system enter sleep, the noise can be heard when entering sleep or resuming from sleep. Same issue not be found if connect the speaker to system directly or downgrade the PM driver to older version.

We are engaging related RD team to investigate it.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours.
