Re: P52s -After Newest Power Mgmt Driver, Speakers Make Popping Noise When Connected to Thunderbolt

2019-01-21, 9:13 AM

Dear Customer,

Sorry for having you wait so long. We have investigated this issue and done some cross-test.

Can you help to double confirm on below things ?

1. we had duplicated the popping noise in lab by S3/resume operation (as i said before).

But we found that , if connecting the Dock to system USB_C port ( no Thunderbolt icon), our issue will disappears.

[Need your help] Can you confirm which system port did you attach the dock to ?

2. with same condition, we can now duplicating the poping noise by playing online video from YouTube (same as you mentioned). Moreover, we got solid failure no matter which PM driver version installed (1.67.14.4/1.67.14.5/1.67.14.7 all fails). We did a experiment by uninstalling the PM driver , same popping noise still can be heard. That means, the popping noise we heard may not related with PM driver version changes. We will engage our dock team for next investigation.

[Need your help] Could you double confirm whether you can hear the popping noise with PM driver 1.67.14.4 ? How about uninstalling the PM driver ?

Sincerely yours.

1. The gen2 Lenovo TB3 dock I have connects to the X1E via a fat double plug which uses both Lenovo power plug and a USB-C connector, so there's only one way to plug it into the system. Also, both USB-C ports have the same lightning icon next to them.

Dear customer,

thanks for your reply. Can you try to uninstall the PM driver and see if same noise issue happens ?

Sincerely yours.

The dock is the problem.  If I bypass the dock and plug my speakers directly into my P52s, I have no popping issues at all.  It's only when using the USB-C Thunderbolt dock does the popping get introduced.

Today out of nowhere (I haven't done any Lenovo updates) videos on youtube are delayed and not synced up with the video. If I change my audio output to my built-in laptop speakers, the audio and video match right up but as soon as I change the output back to the thunderbolt dock, the audio becomes delayed again. Not to mention, the popping is also still present.

Did a bit more troubleshooting, and looks like it has nothing to do with video/audio syncing. It's always audio, any sort of volume adjustment on the slider in the bottom right corner in the task bar is delayed by .5 - .75 a second. Also, applications I'm running have the same audio delay when the dock is used. I've got the latest firmware installed from Lenovo System Updater.

Yup, the lag/delay is not fixed for me either, even though Lenovo said it was.

Figured out the recent delay issue… I had to manually update the driver specifically for ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock USB Audio, and now the delay is gone. The Lenovo System Updater tool somehow isn't picking up this driver being outdated.

Go under Device Manager>Sound, video and game controllers, right click "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock USB Audio" and update driver.  Windows surprosingly found the latest one automatically, and it matched what was on Lenovo's website.

Popping issue needs to be fixed still... super annoying.

Dear Customer,

It's glad to hear you have manually find the Dock USB audio driver and upgrade it successfully.

We are working with Lenovo Vantage team to post this audio driver to it.

Sincerely yours.
