P52s with 2nd M.2 ssd in WWAN

2019-03-08, 4:56 AM

I recently bought a P52s and saw that you can put an M.2 SSD in the WWAN slot. Does the M.2 have to be a Sata or a NVME, and will it actually be able to boot Windows from the SSD?

Dear customer,

Yes, WWAN slot supports NVMe M.2 2242 form factor.

I had not tried to boot from it actually, but I believe it can boot.

BIOS boot order list has the single NVMe entry. So, it belongs to the primary m.2 NVMe 2280 SSD. The rest two HDD entries belong to ATA HDD, i.e.it's not a m.2 PCIe 2242 SSD. IMHO the boot from PCIe 2242 SSD in the wwan/ssd slot isn't possible.

I actually have an HDD currently as the main drive, but I was looking to upgrade to a M.2 SSD and I can't find the SSD tray anywhere so I was going to use the WWAN slot. Since I don't have a main M.2 SSD would the boot work?

I'm also wondering what the max size of NVMe ssd in the WWAN slot? The Lenovo spec says Lenovo sells a 128GB, but a user somewhere has put in a Toshiba 240GB and it works. I would expect there to be a limit only of what 2 Lane NVMe will support, or maybe something in the BIOS as a limit, but should be way higher than 128GB. All I want to install is maybe a 512GB that is now available from Kingston(?). Thanks for any info.

Re: P52s with 2nd M.2 ssd in WWAN

2019-05-12, 21:08 PM

We wanted to share the following information that is relevant to this thread. Hopefully, folks might this information useful.

Our Lenovo P52s comes with 512GB M.2 NVME 2280 form factor SSD. The FRU is 00UP683. In reality, it is a Western Digital PC SN720 with NVMe Gen 3 X 4 with sequential read/write of 3,400/2,500MB/s and random read/write of Up to 440/330K IOPS.

The main M.2 2280 SSD slot is called NVMe0 in the BIOS and is a M.2 slot with the M key. The WWAN/SSD M.2 2242 slot is a M.2 slot with a B key. I think the M.2 2242 WWAN/SSD slot is referenced as NVMe1 in the BIOS since the NVMe0 always shows in the BIOS whatever models SSD we put into the main M.2 2280 SSD slot.

We wanted to add storage beyond the included main FRU 00UP683 SSD, so we purchased and tested two M.2 2242 SATA SSDs below:

1. MyDigitalSSD Super Boot 2 (SB2) 42mm (2242) SATA III (6G) M.2 NGFF SSD Solid State Drive (480GB)

2. KingSpec 2242 NGFF 512GB M.2 SSD SATA III 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive for Ultrabook (512GB)

Both of these M.2 2242 SATA SSDs have the B and M key. We tried installing both of these 2242 SATA SSDs to the main M.2 2280 SSD slot or the WWAN/SSD M.2 2242 slot, but the P52s does not recognize these two SATA SSDs regardless of which M.2 slots we inserted them in. This seems to indicates that the M.2 2242 WWAN/SSD slot cannot see a M.2 SATA SSD drives (only NVMe drive) or the P52s M.2 slot cannot see drives above 256GB.

We upgraded the BIOS and all firmware to the latest using Lenovo Systems Updates. Some of the versions are:

UEFYI BIOS is N27ET34W (1.20) with BIOS date of 2019-02-27.

Imbedded Controller version is N27HT19W (1.08).

ME Firmware version 11.8.60.3561.

Again, the main SSD connection is a M.2 with the M key.

We tested the "HP EX950 M.2 1TB PCIe 3.1 x4 NVMe 3D TLC NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 5MS23AA#ABC" and the P52s recognized thisNVME SSD during POST and show this SSD vendor and model during POST and in the BIOS.

We also tested the Micro Center "Inland Premium 1TB SSD 3D NAND M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4" Internal SSD and the P52srecognized this NVME SSD during POST and show this SSD as "PCIe SSD". This is a very good SSD for the price that uses the Phison E12 controller + 64 layer Toshiba TLC.  Very similar to some of the brand name NVME SSDs.

Both of the M.2 NVME SSDs worked great on the Lenovo P52s.

We wind up just replacing the bundled Lenovo 512GB M.2 NVME FRU 00UP683 SSD with the Inland Premium 1TB SSD 3D NAND M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe since the speed of the VNME is about 4 times the speed of any addded SATA M.2 2242 in the WWAN/SSD slot, we cannot get the 512GB M.2 2242 to be recongnized in the secondary slot and the price delta for the larger Inladn M.2 2280 NVME SSD was about $40 more then a 512GB M.2 2242 SATA SSD.   If you find additional information on the WWAN/SSD slot, please post.  Good luck folks.

Additional reference pictures to corelate with the information above:

1.  Boot order with the "Inland Premium 1TB SSD 3D NAND M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 Internal Solid State Drive" recognized as PCIe SSD.  Western Digital (Lenovo FRU) and HP NVME SSD if installed will show as their native WD or HP  with their respective model number.

2.  Main M.2 2280 slot referenced as NVMe0 in BIOS.

3.  WWAN/SSD M.2 2242 slot probably referenced as NVMe1 in BIOS.  We cannot confirm this since we were not able to get a M.2 2242 SATA to be recognized in this slot.

If you are still interested. Just bought Toshiba rc100 240 gb. It's an m2 2242 nvme ssd. And put it into the P52s wwan slot. It worked like a charm. Windows was installed there without any problems. BTW my main OS is Ubuntu 19.04 and the original Windows installer was erased a long time ago. But using this tool https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht103653 You can recover your original Windows for your laptop online! It downloads a distribution kit after a special request from you. And then puts it in your USB flash drive. So you can install it again.

So just to be clear for anyone reading this because it was not clear to me and I had to work with my Technical Client Advisor (TCA) to find out the correct drive.

If you want to use the WWAN port on the P52s you need a M.2 NVMe SSD 2242 form factor with PCIe 3.0x2 interface. I have provided two links below that would work. I just installed the Western Digital today and it worked like a charm!

Just checking in to see if anyone's been able to get a 1TB card working in the WWAN port of the P52s?

Cheers
