Re:P53 Performance Issues - Thermal/Power Throttling?

Though I should maybe add, that I don't have a "Lenovo Intelligent Power" plan on my P53, just a "balanced" one.

Hi @Branagh,

This power profile is normally installed with another Lenovo driver or service. I believe that what installed it in my machine is Lenovo Vantage Service. This service is installed by Lenovo Vantage (which I recommend installing).

Note that Microsoft makes troubleshooting Power problems complicated as since Windows 10 1809, they added the "power slider" that removed features from Vantage, and Windows 10 2004 removes some other useful stuff.

For Reference, I'm using Windows 10 1909.

@InsanitySquared : Now, would you look at that, you're right! I'm getting between 1,5-2,5 Ghz at idle instead of a constant 4+Ghz now that I've also installed the latest drivers. After a year of having this problem I was mentally so stuck, I didn't even bother to check if anything had changed anymore. Thanks!

Brilliant! I'm glad the issue is finally fixed. Frustrating was an understatement.

Your welcome😊 glad to help.

Oh dear, I fear... if you don't have access to the "intelligent" power plan, than you may not be able to set the slider (there!) to full performance. And, according to the experience I had about one year ago, that means: you will never ever have full performance - regardless(!) of all other sliders or settings! This is in no way intuitive, but IMHO that's how it is. I did benchmarks back then and played Forza Horizont - without the intelligent slider to full, the game was hardly playable with low graphics settings, even with other performance sliders and settings set to full. With the "intelligent" slider to full I am now running the game at highest graphics setting and it runs perfectly.

Well, I'd have to check and see, what happens under Windows's "better" performance option, but so far under "best" performance benchmarks partially showed even higher scores than I found online, with the CPU consistently going to or towards its 4,5Ghz max and the RTX 3000 clocking in at 1,8Ghz according to Nvidia Inspector. So, so far I have not been worried about performance. Still, you never know what the next update will bring..

@ve2mrx: Thanks, I'm on 2004 already and, indeed, I haven't installed Vantage. Maybe that's was part of the problem? I remember I had trouble of some sorts installing it and some discussions around the windows versions and discontinued features, too, but can't remember exactly.

What I meant to say is: As long as somewhen or internally the intelligent slider is up to full, only then, all the other slides will work as you expect. :crossfingers:

Power slider settings changes depending on power source (battery/ac). Just saying.

I'm mostly annoyed of the constant fan running all the time, when I have my set to max performance. Even though the PC does nothing. I'll check/install the update tomorrow - hoping to see some magic.

Indeed! Good point!

Yes, totally agree. The "intelligent" slider unfortunately is not intelligent at all. I got used to set the slider manually. If you want silence: total left, if you need power: total right. If it's wednesday 9:45 slider in the middle, maybe.

Re:P53 Performance Issues - Thermal/Power Throttling?

Update: Yeah the problems are back for me. It was fine until yesterday, and now my package power WILL NOT go above 7W.

When I load it even slightly (open chrome, file explorer) clock speeds drops to a solid and heart breaking 0.4Ghz and stays there until load drops to 6% or less, which it then stays about 1.0Ghz

This with the power slider set to max performance, plugged in and BIOS CPU power management at Max performance.

I am utterly frustrated at this point.

Re:P53 Performance Issues - Thermal/Power Throttling?

I had that in the beginning. It's somewhere in this thread, but many pages in the past (have to look it up). The problem was the thermal protection unit that avoids burning your lap when you are using the machine actually as LAPtop - means: as soon as the P53 remarked any movement/vibration/acceleration, it went to "lap mode" (i call it) meaning: avoid getting hot at any cost -> power down forever. Once in this "lap mode", it never comes back to normal! My solution was first to avoid touching the laptop in gaming or docking station scenarios, then: to create a batch file to restart the "intelligent thermal solution service", and later to hack the registry to disable the thermal throttling.

Before you start hacking the system, you should test: Does the problem still occur when you restart the laptop and don't move/touch the laptop (use a separate keyboard and mouse)?
