P53 - Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut repaste

2019-11-22, 5:08 AM

Hello again!

I decided to do a repaste to solve some performance issues I was having with my P53. The CPU almost instantly starting thermal throttling as soon as any load was applied. It hovered around 97c until the fans spun up to 3400 rpm. Best performance was when the fans were maxed out, which meant there was a thermal interface problem.

Machine Specs

  • 9850h (-100mv)
  • RTX 5000
  • OLED 4K screen
  • 16GB Ram (8x8)
  • 512GB SSD

This machine is Extremely well designed. Taking it apart was quite simple with the help of the manual and this video.

Putting it back together was quite simple. Overall it really sold me on this machine. It is the definition of repairable.

Was it worth it?

In short, yes. CPU temps went down to around 80c with 4.1ghz (9850h) on all cores under load; with a -100mv undervolt.

GPU never went above 70c. As I said before, unfortunately the repaste didn't really solve my performance problem, but it did solve the cooling problem.

My replacement P53 came in today, temps are slightly worst then the repaste but not different enough to repaste the replacement.

P.S

I do think the P53 can handle the 90w RTX4000/5000. So upload those vBios' all you P73 owners, please! All it takes is GPU-Z and a button press.

Thank you much for the update, pictures and write up.

I am tempted to do the same to my P73 ....

Very useful

Excellent photos - thanks for sharing. For my issues,  I think it's a device and/or software problem. The throttling happens regardless of temps.

It may be worth it to do an RMA.

The new unit I got hasn't had any of the issues you have. No throttling of any sort.

No strange hitching either, which could be the random memory drops.

Thanks for the photo documentation! I'm going to repaste my P53 later this week. Was there anything vastly different working on your P53 compared to the P52 video?

Anything to lookout for? Thanks!
