P53 keyboard issues

2019-12-29, 9:27 AM

Hi all,

I've had my P53 workstation for a few months now, and it seems to be randomly missing key presses. I originally thought it might be a problem with my typing, but a quick Google search showed me the same problem has been experienced by some on other Thinkpads of the same generation.

Has anyone had the same problem? Is there any solution I can try before returning it?

The problem is quite infrequent, but frequent enough to be noticeable and letters disappear when I write a long text.

Thanks.

I have the same issue.  It is very annoying.  I sent it back to the depot to get repaired.  There is an extreme keyboard lag on the P53.

I've had my P53 for 3 months now and have not noticed any keystrokes being missed. I do notice that the trackpad is quite sensitive to the position of my right thumb. It's possible that the missing keystroke could be caused by inadvertent touches on the trackpad. One way to determine if this is part of the problem is to totally disable the trackpad and see if the problem is still there.

I notice that before as well and I assume is just me getting used to the keyboard. From what I have experience it looks like the keyboard locks up under specific key combination and its mostly noticeable when typing quickly. Try to press s and d together and you will notice that some keys will work and some wont. For example in that situation the key e wont work but k will plus other keys will. This is not the case when I use the external keyboard and I assume it is a hardware limitation on how they keyboard is connected.

I have been seeing this problem.  I often get missed keystrokes and even sometimes keystrokes that get out of order.

There's a thread over in the X1 Extreme Gen 2 forum about a problem with missing keystrokes.  Apparently they recently got a BIOS update with a fix.  I am hoping the same thing will happen for the P53.

This is a huge quality problem with an otherwise outstanding machine.

Keyboard on P53 Thinkpad intermittently misses typed letters. Has been an issue since day 1 in March 2020 but I thought it would resolve with some update. It is now 10 months later and no update has resolved the annoying problem. The keyboard also has a cheap, flimsy, poor "feel" to it - although this is the lesser problem. Seems a basic, very careless hardware and/or software problem - hard to believe considering it's a  pricey machine. I see no Lenovo response on this issue in the forum. Very, very disappointing.

I actually ended up sending the ThinkPad back to Lenovo, they sent it back repaired and I haven't had any more problems with it since. Granted, I now use an external keyboard (not to fix the problem, but to make my home office more ergonomic), but when I do use the built-in keyboard I've had no problems.
