P53s (20N6001JGE) ridiculous performance issues

2020-05-11, 7:51 AM

Hi,

since approximately two months I've got extreme performance issues with my P53s to the extent that even typing is delayed and I can watch the letters appear on screen. I noticed the CPU always running ridiculously under clocked. The frequency is also pretty jumpy, going from 0.4 GHz to 1.2 and back all the time. Further, the integrated Intel GPU is always loaded and jumps to 100% if I drag windows across the desktop or even while typing this. Meanwhile, the dedicated GPU sits at 0% load and is generally barely used at all. High GPU load seems to be caused by the Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe).

Drivers and firmware are current. I use the machine exclusively docked. The behavior does not change if I take it out of the dock.

What I tried so far:

  • Reinstalling graphics drivers, Lenovo OEM and Intel generic (cleaned with DDU)
  • Disabling CPU energy saving options
  • Disabling Windows frequency scaling
  • Explicitly select the dedicated GPU for apps like MS Teams or Firefox
  • Disconnecting external displays
  • Take it out of the dock

System information:

  • Windows build: 1909 (18363.778)
  • Intel GPU driver version: 27.20.100.8187
  • Nvidia driver version: 26.21.14.4223 (442.23)
  • BIOS-Version: N2IET87W 1.65
  • See attached DxDiag.txt for more info

Hi, are you still having this issue? It sounds like thermal throttling. Download something like hwmonitor and watch your temperatures. If you're in the 90C range under normal activity, your laptop's thermal paste job might have been botched at the factory.

Thermals are ok. Load on the integrated GPU seems to be the issue. It spikes to 100% if you move any window around (dwm.exe causing the load). It gets better if the screen resolution is lowered or one of the 2 screens (1440p) is disconnected, still not good. It might be a Windows/driver related problem. I've installed Ubuntu 20.04 and the performance seems to be better. Still, not something I'd consider usable for my daily work (struggles running Firefox stutter free some times). I'm going to replace the machine. I'm done wasting my time.

I've tried a couple 1440p external monitors on mine and it also does not feel as snappy as with just the internal monitor, but I don't think mine struggles as much as yours. If you want to give it one last shot, you might try booting into safe mode, uninstalling the intel graphics driver with Display Driver Uninstaller, then updating through lenovo vantage. Though the most recent igpu driver removes the top level of brightness adjustment so instead of 500nits you get stuck at around half that - if you need the older driver version I can share mine with you. You could also look into reducing or disabling windows aero related options, and I think disabling the win-tab timeline helps a bit too.

High CPU usage in DWM is often related to themes or wallpaper.  Here is a fairly good description:
