Re: P70 BIOS 2.11 degrades RAM performance

just downgraded to BIOS 2.08, DDR4 speed is now 2666 MHz.

BIOS 2.11:  2133 MHz with CAS latency 15

BIOS 2.08: 2666 MHz with CAS latency 18

Strange, any reason why they changed this that you are aware of?

Re: P70 BIOS 2.11 degrades RAM performance

No idea why they crippled the P70 RAM speed, it is not in the release notes AFAIK. I couldn't find BIOS 2.09, maybe it is listed there as a change.

Note: performance degradtion is not as big as I thought intially,because CAS latency increases:

- 2666 MHz @ CAS 18 = 6.75 ns

- 2133 MHz @ CAS 15 = 7.03 ns

The degradation due to BIOS 2.11 is 4%

To state my point: if the P70 BIOS would support XMP, the potential performance improvement would be 26% over 2.08, 30% over 2.11

- 3000 MHz @ CAS 15 = 5.00 nsec

Re: P70 BIOS 2.11 degrades RAM performance

correction: my RAM with XMP support would have CAS latency of 16 instead of 15. Aslo, the latency is double the amount I calculated above. So:

- 2133 MHz @ CAS 15 = 14.064 ns = BIOS 2.11  => 100%

- 2666 MHz @ CAS 18 = 13.504 ns = BIOS 2.08 => +4.1%

- 3000 MHz @ CAS 16 = 10.666 ns = next BIOS? =>  +31.9%

Of course, memory speed isn't the only thing driving performance.

For my applications it unfortuntely happens to be key. I already upgraded to E3-1575 for fast cache, but now the DDR4 memory latency is the next bottleneck.

Thank you for all the info :)  Can I ask, did you upgrade to the 1575 after you already had the 1505?  Was it a socketed cpu?

You can, certainly, buy any kind of memory you want but P70's MoBo supports up to 2133 MHz DDR4 RAM:

Any installed memory faster than 2133 MHz will be underclocked and, therefore, would be a waste of money.

P51/P71 should support faster RAM, though.

dear jwd101,

My first P70was one of the first batches, with an 1505. I got it late December last year, but had several motherboard failures. After teh third, i got a full refund (great support BTW) and from that I bought the P70 1575 version. So far, so good :-)

dear Lenovo support,

why have you degraded the RAM speed from 2666 MHz to 2133 MHz afer BIOS 2.08?

This case is not closed!

Re: P70 BIOS 2.11 degrades RAM performance

hi

Just upgraded the BIOS to 2.15 and checked the memory access time. Good news: it has been greatly improved!

The CAS latency has improved for 16 to 13 cycles, somewhere between BIOS 2.11 and BIOS 2.15.

Good job, Lenovo :smileyhappy:
