P70 Default RAM Location for 32GB of RAM

2016-11-03, 3:05 AM

Does anyone know where Lenovo would install the RAM if the 32GB option is selected? Would the 32GB of RAM be installed beneath the keyboard so that I can open the botton cover and easily install another 32GB of RAM? I'm hoping the factory installed RAM goes underneath the keyboard eaving the more easily accesible RAM slots available.

Any clarification is appreciaited.

Also would this be a suitable memory option for an additional 32GB of RAM to play nice with the 32GB factory RAM option by Lenovo?

It would go in one of the two slots under the keyboard--probably slot 3 (1&3 under the keyboard, 2&4 under the bottom access hatch. Slot one is closet to the motherboard, slot three is on top of it and thus farther away from the mobo). To get dual-channel mode, you would have to remove the keyboard, move the current chip to the slot closet to the mobo (slot 1), and then add your new ram to slot 3. However, I think that 32GB is probably 4x8GB sticks. If it is 2x16GB sticks, they would fill both of the slots under the keyboard, thus leaving both slots under the back access hatch free for you to upgrade later.

Just as an aside, I have had a lot of Thinkpad mobile workstations going all the way back and if you are concerned about removing the keyboard, don't be, they have always made it very easy.  Just have to be careful not to be too heavy-handed but it's not bad.

We recently got a few P70s with 32GB ECC memory and in all of them both sticks were installed in the bay under the keyboard so we just added the other two 16GB in the slots under the back cover. As far as we know from Lenovo support, in order to make them work in dual channel mode, the pairing slots are 1 & 3 located under the keyboard and 2 & 4 located under the bottom cover.

I think the pairing happens automatically at startup, whenever the configuration has changed.
