Re: P70 I it possible to hotswap dvd with a SSD caddy ?

2016-03-15, 13:15 PM

Another good question.  Since the P70 is quite new, it would be hard to imagine that 3rd party suppliers have jumped into the fray just yet, particularly since the curved, narrow bezel and new attachment screw seem to be new and unique features.

If anyone has figures this out, please do post the results of your search -- many seem interested.

here the dummy caddy that I received.  It's for blocking the hole when we don't have a dvd drive.

This is interesting, thanks.

Is there any chance you could get creative with a Dremel tool and some bits of hobby-shop plastic or metal to actually mount an HDD or SSD  in this unit?   It looks like there are foam or tape strips in-place to support or cushion a drive so I'm wondering how close this is to the "real thing."

Re: P70 I it possible to hotswap dvd with a SSD caddy ?

I have a P70 and reused the ultrabay adapter from a T530. => needed some corrections regarding additional plastic. It works fine but does not support hotswap. Either because there is a screw and the driver/system does not support that.

Beside that it is a normal ultrabay slot and my 2TB HDD works just fine there.

So already using 1*M2 pci SSD + 1*SATA SSD + 1 SATA HDD => 3,5 TB storage one of the reasons why I love the P70. And one M2 Slot is free for later upgrades.

Re: P70 I it possible to swap dvd drive with a SSD caddy ?

can you put a picture ?  I know that we can't have hotswap because of the screw, but at this point, it doesn't matter, I'll never have 2-3 adapter, and I'll just replace the dvd by a ssd drive.

If the T530 caddy fit well, I'll check that.  Seems like the W540 fit too, but wasn't able to find a picture when the caddy is installed.

I don't want a hole of 2-3mm so the dust can enter in the laptop.

Lenovo restored the device color for a reason. Black electrical tape to the resque!

P.S. Anticipating "using black electrical tape in a $XXXX laptop, OMG!", black electrical tape was useful before to fix a rattling battery in T/W series :) It's not noticeable btw, except when looking at the laptop at this very specific angle.
