Re:P71 Lost HDMI Audio w/Latest Thunderbolt Firmware

2021-07-17, 1:00 AM

I believe all P71s have 2 Thunderbolt Ports. These ARE USB-C ports. This is in addition to the 4 USB-A Ports.

Note This is NOT a SOLVED reply to the problem.   Just a response to the question about USB-A Ports.

Re:P71 Lost HDMI Audio w/Latest Thunderbolt Firmware

I have reported this issue to "the powers that be", so that they are genuinely aware of it inside internal Lenovo engineering.

I have suggested a temporary "solution" might be to just push out the previous firmware package re-numbered with a NEW VERSION NUMBER, so that the machine will actually apply it. This will overcome the current problem that the new firmware once applied cannot simply be rolled back to a previous version by re-running that older installer. With this re-packaged older firmware with a new version number will trick the machine, and get the firmware actually rolled back to the previous version when all was still well with HDMI.  And this will then give Lenovo engineering a chance to debug what they broke in the official version 46 and get it corrected and re-released.

I'm hoping my "urgent message to higher-ups" will be seen and heard and responded to very quickly, as a red-flag alert should be.

In the meantime the inexpensive USBC-to-HDMI adapter or cable solution is an acceptable (but annoying, of course) workaround. At least you get HDMI back for under $10.

Ok this happened to me as well. Did the firmware update before going to bed. Got to my session and plugged in the external monitor via HDMI and 1080p was the highest resolution. I thought it might have been a bad cable but when I got home and plugged in same thing. While investigating, Nvidia control panel reports it as a DVI connection. And searching for a solution led me here.

Dear customers,

P71 development team had confirmed the symptom and found the incorrect setting in the firmware which related to HDMI.

They are working to provide the fixed version to the web as soon as possible.  Please wait for a moment to get fix FW.

Yep - does not work.  You cannot roll back to an earlier version of the BIOS.

yea it didn't work for me either. I just went out and bought a USB C --> HDMI adapter, so now I'm using both USB C outlets and I've got my resolution back. My HDMI outlet is hosed.

Same issue here, after the Thunderbolt update a day ago. Lost audio through HDMI and HDMI ID in sound settings.

I would have thought that Lenovo would have rescinded the update for those who have not done it yet...
