Re:P71 Lost HDMI Audio w/Latest Thunderbolt Firmware

The resolution on my 4k monitor is limited to 1920 X 1080, on a $7500 laptop, and Lenovo has no solution?! I need this for work, like everyone else. Fix it!

Re:P71 Lost HDMI Audio w/Latest Thunderbolt Firmware

2021-07-21, 23:46 PM

I've just looked at the P71 driver support page for Thunderbolt firmware, and it appears to have been updated just yesterday July 20, 2021. As shown right now, the most current version is now what appears to be the rolled-back previous version 43 (the reported defective version was 46):

  Build ID Update tool Firmware build NVM Rev. Issue Date ---------- ------------ --------------- ---- ----- -------------- n1tbd04w 17.0.0.3 N1TTF03W 43 01 2019/09/02 n1tbd03w 16.0.0.2 N1TTF02W 35 01 2018/07/12 n1tbd02w 16.0.0.1 N1TTF02W 35 01 2018/06/28 n1tbd01w 1.0.3.0 N1TTF01W 15 01 2017/03/14

So it appears engineering has for the time being, until a corrected version gets re-published through Vantage, pulled further propagation of the problematic version 46 TB firmware update. This should therefore prevent any additional P71 users from being impacted.

Unfortunately, there is no way for already impacted P71 users to actually reapply this version 43 firmware. Once version 46 is installed, it cannot be undone.

In the current absence of a true corrected version (although given observed Lenovo recognition of the problem I would think it could be coming very soon), a quick Amazon purchase of an under-$10 USB-c to HDMI adapter or cable is still a temporary (if annoying) workaround. Assuming one of your TB USB-c ports is free, this will at least get your P71 back into "normal" operational mode right now.

Re:P71 Lost HDMI Audio w/Latest Thunderbolt Firmware

Giving up one of my USB-C cables, both of which I need and use heavily, and buying an adapter from Amazon, is about as useful a fix as using the P71 to prop my window open because I'd better go and buy a machine that can handle my workload, now that Lenovo broke this one. By the way, Lenovo, I'm still waiting on that $300 worth of software I purchased with this machine, 4 years ago, that I never received. I called about 30 times and the customer service agents from some other country just kept putting me on hold for hours until they hung up on me. I posted that video elsewhere on the forum, but you deleted / moderated it. Thinkpad used to be #1 back in the day. They really were outstanding. It's shameful what's happened here. I'll never drop this kind of money on a machine from Lenovo ever again.

I am still waiting on my call back from my "escalated case number" on 7/16.  I have not had the time to call them back, I am afraid I will heard the 'your laptop is not under warranty and your case was cancelled' again and lose it on some call center person again.  I also purchased a USB-C to HDMI cable to be able to use my 4K monitor, although this IS NOT A SOLUTION.

FWIW, You can also use a Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter. But be sure that the adapter is specd for up to 4K, if needed.

The lower priced ones only go up to 1080x1920.

I bought a low priced one to try and it only works up to 1080x1920. This was specified in the eBay listing.

Any news of this issue? Lenovo Vantage hasn't found any new updates yet.

Thanks for the link, Punch Card.

All fixed up now. Only issue is that I need to manually disable Realtek audio to get sound to my tv were before is was automatic whenever I plugged in HDMI. Maybe a setting somewhere.

Checked today, Lenovo Vantage still hasn't offered the fix after doing an update search.

Here's my issue (posting): https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile-Workstations/P71-no-longer-recognizes-external-monitor-native-resolution-of-3840x1600-maxes-out-on-1920x1080/m-p/5091983

My issue got solved by this thread. 🙏

However:

External monitor resolution detection is unstable.

I frequently have missing resolutions above 1920x1080 on system startup. I have to restart the system a couple of times pretty often.

Lenovo, please, can you fix this? Are there any settings?
